Police recognized for work in child abuse

Laguna police were honored for their work with child abuse

victims.

The Child Abuse Services Team of Orange County, composed of a

collection of county social workers, medical professionals and law

enforcement officers, gave a plaque to the police department at the

Oct. 19 City Council meeting. The award was accepted by Sgt. Darin

Lenyi and Det. Zach Martinez.

The Child Abuse Services Team was set up in 1989 to interview

children who reported being victims of abuse. Laguna police have

referred children to the team since it was created.

“They’re more sensitive to the needs of kids,” Lenyi said.

The award was given to thank Laguna police for working with the

team for 15 years, said Jan Grotewald, the team’s advocate program

manager. The team has honored other county police departments that

have participated in the program.

Motorcyclist collides with cars, drives off

The driver of a blue motorcycle fled the scene of a hit-and-run

accident on Saturday, police said.

A man on the blue motorcycle was traveling southbound on South

Coast Highway at Oak Street at about 10:54 a.m. Saturday when he

attempted to pass between two vehicles and collided with both, police

said.

“The rider disconnected from the two vehicles and fled the scene,”

said Sgt. Darren Lenyi of the Laguna Beach Police Department.

The drivers of the other two vehicles, Joyce Gauvan, 50, of

Goleta, and Kaylen Morrison, 23, of Newport Beach, were not injured,

police said.
