Wayne Baglin -- still has the passion

Wayne Baglin has served on the City Council in each of past four

decades and he said the years have not dulled his enthusiasm.

“I am still passionate about Laguna Beach,” Baglin said. “Anyone

who has attended any of the forums knows that.

“However, I have mellowed. Arnold Hano [Village Laguna founder and

long-time resident] will vouch for that.”

Baglin’s passion for the ocean still flourishes.

“We need to protect the health and safety of the users, and me

personally,” Baglin said. “I love to body surf.”

Baglin served on the state Regional Water Quality Board San Diego

region, which includes part of Laguna Beach from 1997 to 2001.

In the last four years, the city has made a concentrated effort to

rectify problems in its aging sewer system. Baglin chaired the now

defunct Waste Water Advisory Committee.

“No one individual can take credit for what the council

[accomplishes], but if I am not on the council, there will be

back-sliding,” Baglin said.

Baglin also served on the Wilderness Park Design Task Force, and

as a council representative on the Greenbelt Authority, which

administers the park. He is a director of the Laguna Canyon

Foundation.

He opposes the relocation of the Maintenance Yard to the Act V

parking lot in Laguna Canyon.

Baglin was born in 1943 in Glendale.

He and his wife, Faye, who he married in 1966, moved to Laguna

Beach in 1969. Their daughter, Whitney, was born here in 1970; son,

Flynn was born 14 months later.

Baglin made his first run for City Council in 1972, lost, ran

again in 1978 and was elected. He served 3 3/4 years before

resigning to work in Saudi Arabia.

He was on the council that hired City Manager Ken Frank. Baglin

would like to be on the council that retires him.

“Ken no longer has the enthusiasm to do the job,” Baglin said.

The Baglins returned to Laguna Beach in 1984. He ran for City

Council in 1994 and won; ran again in 1998 and lost a close election

to Toni Iseman.

Baglin was reelected in 2000.

He is the only candidate in this election who had a political

action committee formed to defeat him.
