Tars’ Blue sets mark

Whitney Blue placed first overall for the Newport Harbor High girls

cross country team, running the three-mile Laguna Hills High course

in 17:01 Friday in the second Sea View League cluster meet involving

Woodbridge, Laguna Hills, Foothill, Aliso Niguel, Irvine and Newport.

Kenny Rakestraw led the Sailor boys with an eighth-place finish

(15:54) as Newport went 3-2 against its league counterparts. The

Sailors (7-3 in league) beat Woodbridge, 27-28, Aliso Niguel, 26-29,

and Irvine, 27-30, and fell to Foothill, 24-31, and Laguna Hills,

26-31.

Blue’s time broke a school record for a three-mile course and

helped the Sailor girls also finish 3-2 at the meet. Newport defeated

Aliso Niguel, 26-29, Laguna Hills, 19-36, and Irvine, 25-30, while

losing to Foothill, 25-34, and Woodbridge, 27-28.

Lauren Maddox finished fifth in 18:04 with teammate Courtney

Marshall (19:20) following in 19th. Taylor Bryson (20th in 19:25),

Zuzana Bernard (26th in 19:40) and Caitlin Mai (32nd in 20:23)

rounded out the top five for the Sailor girls.

Nick St. Andre finished 11th in 16:06 followed in 12th by teammate Martin Bernard (16:11) for the Sailor boys. Wesley Urtusuastegui

(26th in 16:41), Cameron McLaren (30th in 16:50), Michael Jugan (35th

in 17:09) and Francisco Avonce (38th in 17:22) finished for Newport.

The Sailor boys will enter Friday’s league finals meet at Irvine

Park second in league behind Laguna Hills (10-0).

The Sailor girls (4-6 in league), meanwhile, are within one win of

extending the team’s life into the postseason.

Newport’s girls need to beat Irvine and Aliso Niguel in the league

finals Friday at Irvine Park to qualify for the CIF Southern Section

Preliminaries Nov. 13 at Mt. San Antonio College.

CdM opens with 2 wins

* WATER POLO: Corona del Mar High’s boys water polo team opened up

the 16-team Tru West Memorial Cup invitational with two victories

Friday at Lynbrook High in San Jose and moves into today’s

semifinals. The Sea Kings (15-7) downed Miramonte, 9-5, in their

opener before scoring a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over

Harvard-Westlake in the second game.

CdM faces Foothill at 1:40 p.m. today at Bellarmine High while

Long Beach Wilson and Bellarmine play at 12:30 p.m. in the other

semifinal. The final is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Bellarmine.

CdM’s Jacob Murphy scored two goals a minute apart in the fourth

quarter to seal the victory against Harvard-Westlake, ranked one spot

higher (No. 3) than CdM (fourth) in the CIF Southern Section Division

I poll. The Sea Kings outscored the Wolverines, 3-1, in the fourth quarter, including Kyle Hersh’s goal that tied the game at 3.

Bryan Buhagiar and Thomas Pearson each added single goals against

the Wolverines while goalkeeper Gaston Sanford tallied a

personal-best 17 saves and four steals.

Buhagiar, Kyle Hersh, Tom Money and Pearson each scored two goals

while Spencer Pirdy added one score in the Sea Kings’ victory over

Miramonte.

Hersh tallied three assists while Money led the Sea Kings with

five steals. Pearson finished with four steals.

Mesa dominates pool

* WATER POLO: The Costa Mesa High boys water polo team defeated

Fullerton, 14-2, Friday in the North Orange County tournament at

Northwood High.

Kyle Thorsness scored eight goals, while Adam Douglas added three

more to lead Costa Mesa (15-4).

If Mesa defeats Estancia on Tuesday, the Mustangs will clinch

first place in the Golden West League.

Sailors split first two

* WATER POLO: Newport Harbor High’s boys water polo team went 1-1

in its first two games of the Tru West Memorial Cup at Bellarmine

High of San Jose Friday.

Clay Jorth scored seven goals in the two games -- the Sailors

(13-9) defeated Clovis West, 12-7, in the first round while falling

to Long Beach Wilson, 9-8, in the second round.

Newport plays in a fifth-place semifinal against either El Toro or

Sacred Heart Prep at 10:10 a.m. today. The fifth-place final is

scheduled for 4:40 p.m.

Jorth scored four goals against Wilson (20-2) while teammate Jovan

Vranes added two scores to go with one apiece by Nate Castillo and

Brett Auer.

Jorth added three against Clovis West while younger brother

Clinton Jorth tallied two scores. Auer and Telford Cottam each added

two goals while Vranes, Daniel Furman and Carson Hill each chipped in

one score for Newport. Sailor senior goalkeeper Michael Robinson made

15 saves in the two games.

Zapiain leads OCC

* VOLLEYBALL: Melissa Zapiain led the Orange Coast College women’s

volleyball team with 18 kills in a 30-26, 28-30, 30-22, 30-23 win

over visiting Saddleback Friday in Orange Empire Conference play.

Samantha Connor had 12 kills and Donka Drozd had 11 kills and four blocks for the Pirates (11-3, 7-2 in OEC).

Newport slips on road

* VOLLEYBALL: The Newport Harbor High girls volleyball team lost

two matches Friday at the Tournament of Champions in Santa Barbara.

The Sailors (9-10, 6-2 in league) were defeated by Bullard of

Fresno, 25-23, 15-25, 25-22, 26-24, in the first match and then lost

to Santa Barbara, 25-14, 25-21, 26-24.

Junior Bryana Carey led Newport with 17 kills, while Kiley Hall

had 11 in the loss to Bullard. Sophomore Megan Toman led with seven

kills and Carey added six in the second match.

UCI falls to UCR

* SOCCER: The UC Irvine women’s soccer team lost to visiting UC

Riverside, 3-1, Friday in Big West Conference play.

Gina Scachetti scored the loan goal for the Anteaters (4-13-2,

1-7-0 in conference) off of an assist by Britney Webster.

The Anteaters host Cal State Fullerton Sunday at 1 p.m.

Lasers snap OCC streak

* SOCCER: Host Irvine Valley College snapped Orange Coast’s

seven-game winning streak with a 3-0 upset victory Friday in Orange

Empire Conference men’s soccer action.

The Pirates fell to (9-4-3, 7-2-2 in the OEC), but remain in

second place behind Santa Ana (14-0-2, 10-0-1) with three conference

matches left. The Lasers (5-9-3, 3-5-3) won their third in a row.

Pirates tie Hawks, 0-0

* SOCCER: The Orange Coast College women’s soccer team put the

first blemish on the conference record of visiting Santiago Canyon by

holding the league leaders to a 0-0 draw Friday in Orange Empire

Conference play.

The Hawks entered the game with a 14-0-1 overall mark, and a 12-0

record in the OEC, but the Pirates (10-4-3, 8-4-2) held them from

scoring, the first time that has happened for Santiago Canyon this

year.
