Vanguard men’s soccer team wins conference

The Vanguard University men’s soccer team defeated Biola, 2-1, in

overtime Saturday to earn a share of the Golden State Athletic

Conference title for the first time in Vanguard history.

VU senior Jose Hernandez, who assisted Mariano Salcedo’s goal,

scored the game-winner in overtime to improve the Lions to 15-4, 9-1

in conference.

VU shares the league title with Azusa Pacific.

UCI rallies at Idaho

* VOLLEYBALL: Trisha White recorded a team-high 23 kills for the

UC Irvine women’s volleyball team Saturday night as the Anteaters

rallied to defeat host Idaho, 27-30, 30-26, 25-30, 30-20, 15-13, in

Big West Conference action before 515 fans.

Kelly Wing added 22 kills and 18 digs for the Anteaters (16-6, 9-4

in the Big West), while teammates Sami Cash and Amanda Vazquez had 11

and 10 kills, respectively.

UCI setter Ashlie Hain dished out 69 assists and added 14 digs,

while Cash and Dana Kurzbard each had four blocking assists for the

Anteaters, who play at Long Beach State next Saturday. Idaho fell to

14-8, 6-6.

Anteaters fall to UCLA

* SOCCER: The UC Irvine men’s soccer team lost, 1-0, to the No. 4

UCLA Bruins Saturday night in front of a crowd of 1,230 in a

nonconference match at Anteater Stadium.

The Bruins (10-2-2) got on the board quickly with a cross from

Marvell Wynne to Chad Barrett 1:09 into the match. They held off the

Anteater attack for the final 88:51. UCLA and UCI (6-9-0) each had

nine shots on goal.

Senior keeper Cameron Rossi had six saves for the ‘Eaters. Eric

Reed had two saves for the Bruins as he earned the shutout.

The Anteaters return to Big West Conference action at 7 p.m.

Wednesday when they host Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The ‘Eaters are

2-3-0 in the Big West.

Sunbirds stay perfect

* VOLLEYBALL: Host Fresno Pacific, the top-ranked women’s

volleyball team in the NAIA, defeated Vanguard in four games Saturday

afternoon, 28-30, 30-16, 30-28, 30-26, in Golden State Athletic

Conference action.

Marin Shilling recorded a match-high 25 kills for the Sunbirds

(27-0, 16-0 in the GSAC), while Jaclyn Lee pounded a team-high 17

kills for the Lions (22-10, 9-7), followed by teammates Sonrisa Peace

with 14 and freshman Kim Wynn with 13. Junior Keri DeHaas led

Vanguard with 21 digs, followed by Sevryn Demos with 17 and Wynn with 16. VU setter Marissa Cothran contributed 51 assists and 13 digs.

Vanguard travels to Cal Baptist at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Biola claims GSAC title

* SOCCER: The host Vanguard University women’s soccer team made it

close Saturday night, but No. 3-ranked Biola defeated the Lions, 2-1,

in Golden State Athletic Conference action as the Eagles sealed the

GSAC title.

Biola (14-0-1, 10-0 in the GSAC) scored in the 44th and 57th

minutes and the Lions (7-9-2, 2-7-1) got on the board in the 80th

minute when Bethany Monka headed in a corner kick from senior Ashley

DeLoach for her first collegiate goal.
