Defense keys Disco Dancers
The AYSO Region 97 boys under-16 Disco Dancers defeated Huntington
Beach, 3-1, Saturday.
The Dancers were led by a stingy defense from goalkeeper Tommy
Olson (five saves), sweeper P.J. Baca, and defenders Alex Flores,
Seth Janica, Chris Lewis, Justin Whisler and Gary Guerrero.
The midfield was led by Timothy Regan, Dillon Giedt, Jose Mendez
and Morgan Webster, while forwards Sergio Rodriguez and Brian
Siemonsma controlled the offense.
The Newport team got the scoring started early when Webster took a
pass from Rodriguez and forwarded it to Siemonsma, who put it past
the keeper for a goal. The next goal was set up on a penalty kick.
Rodriguez’s shot was initially blocked by the keeper, but Rodriguez
tapped the rebound into the net.
In boys under-13 play:
* Newport Mesa Infinity 7, PSC Pirates 0
Sean Davis scored a hat trick to lead the Newport-Mesa Infinity
past the PSC Pirates 7-0. Davis drove his first shot home off a pass
from Gavin Arblaster. Davis tallied the second goal thanks to a
series of completed passes by Sean Donahue, Rory Kew and Simon
Hedrick.
In the second half, Juan Gonzalez scored the first of his two
goals on a rebound from an Austin Webster blast. Webster then scored
just minutes later. With ten minutes remaining, Arblaster juked two
defenders before hammering a shot too hard for the Pirate keeper to
hold on to -- his second goal in two weeks. Jesse Perez recorded his
third consecutive shutout thanks to some great saves and a defense
lead by Rodri Ruvalcaba, Austin Wobrock, Zac Chocek, Daniel Netzer,
Cameron Conway and John Ryder.
Midfielders Erickson Klein and Shane Rocco worked tirelessly.
In girls under-12 play:
* Newport Beach 5, South Irvine 0
Sarah Buckingham and Brianna Truxton applied instant pressure to
the South Irvine defense. Truxton broke free and scored early and,
moments later, Buckingham had a long breakaway and centered the ball
to Chelsea Barth scored again for Newport.
Buckingham had another long breakaway, beat the Irvine defense and
scored to put Newport up 3-0. Newport’s defense of Megan Case and
Erika Page controlled the action. Christie Ohlhaver played in center,
while Kathryn Zimmermann fed Ava Nelson a pass for a goal. Kelly
Rorden scored her first goal to put Newport up 5-0.
Emily Boone, Nellie Healy and Nicole Baker played at midfield.
In girls under-11 play:
* Newport 4, Costa Mesa 0
Josie Jogwe scored on a long shot that sailed high into the net
and quickly got Newport up early in the first quarter. Nicole
Dinatale added another goal with a left-footed shot before the
quarter ended.
In the second quarter, Jogwe made another and the score was 3-0 at
the end of the first half. Madison Wooters opened up the scoring in
the second half. Newport’s defense, of Monique Conant, Emily
Mitchell, Allison Schelin, Delaney Bell, Ali Hayes, Natalie Duthoy,
Madison Grant, Francesca Cappellini, Molly Andersen, Meaghan Kay and
Savanna Gastineau, held tough throughout.
In girls under-10 play:
* Riptide 3, Heartbreakers 1
Megan Bathen scored the lone goal for the Heartbreakers and also
played one quarter in goal. Erin Hinkelman, Katie Gaitan, Makayla
Swies and Sarah Zomaya also played on offense. Gabe Parisi played a
half as halfback and the other half in the goal. Taylor Kalatschan,
Ricci Barton and Alex Palmer and Andrea Ocampo played on defense.
* Angels 3, Seekers 1
The Angels’ Kathryn De La Torre scored early and several other
first-half opportunities were created by Kelsey Long, Cassidy Davis
and Samantha Sanchez, with Megan Farley adding to the lead off a pass
from Reo Nathan. Strong defense by Hannah Walker, Caroline Johnson,
Julia Frei and Julia Perry held the Gryffindor Seekers to one goal.
The Angels’ Walker, Madison Botteron and Alice Miller dominated on
offense late in the game, enabling De La Torre to score her second
goal to seal the victory.
Seekers’ defense of Taylor Hickerson, Alice Barry, Andie Strode
and goalies Katty Ayala and Jane Layton worked hard to keep the
Angels’ offense to only one goal. Lea Phillips, Kirsten Rohan and
Samantha Stalder of the Seekers were able to work together to help
Analysa Vivanco score the first goal for the Seekers.
* Rip Curl
The Rip Curls moved into second place with a win Saturday as Sammy
Singer scored her first goal of the season. Roxy Crane and Madison
Jabara followed with goals. Protecting the goal for the Rip Curls
were Nikki Walsh, Page Keys, Alyssa Ohlig and Savannah Baron. Keeping
the ball out of the goal were Ally Kahn and Monika Peterson. The
offense was aided by Catherine Connelly and Hayley Newett.
In boys under-10 play:
* Avalanche 3, Patriots 0
Nic Sargeant broke open a close match and gave the Avalanche a 3-0
win over the Patriots. Sam Jones and Scott Grew set up the scores
with long lead passes. Gage Coffelt and Parker Martinez had shots on
goal that were turned away by strong Patriot play.
Coffelt had the assist on Sargeant’s first-half goal. Rory Fleming
and Chris Buchanan controlled midfield with excellent positioning
well placed passes. Gordon Lewis and Riley Ricker turned in strong
defensive play and Kevin Rakestraw cleared midfield on goalie kicks.
* Funky Monkeys
True Tamplin had his first hat trick, while Taylor Parks put in
two and Ellery Sever managed to put in one goal on an assist from
Sean Cox. Cole Chapin, Ian Batstone, Ian Mac Innis and Kolby Pearson
had a very good day with action on both sides of the field. Michael
Reo and Trevor Conway played as goalkeepers.
* Devil Rays 2, Funky Monkeys 1
Bob Boullon’s goal put the Devil Rays into the lead in the first
quarter, in a hard-fought game that saw no more scoring for two
quarters. Marc Gehlke, R.J. Roberts, Rocky Gonzales and Izaak Lofgren
took a number of shots on goal that were stopped by the Monkeys’
goalies and the defense of True Tamplin.
T.J. Tarazevits and Lee Stevens dominated the midfield for the
Rays, while Jake Wadman, Isiah Suarez and Brandt Boucher provided
formidable obstacles to the Monkeys with their careful footwork.
Taylor Parks scored for the Monkeys in the fourth quarter to tie
up the game. Max Johnson passed with Boullon, who scored to put the
Rays ahead again. The Monkeys launched an all-out offensive assault,
but Goalie Zack Cornwell stopped a Monkey score on the line.
In girls under-8 play:
* Disco Girls vs. Purple Panthers
Mackenzie Gaddis of the Disco Girls scored the only goal of the
game against a tough Purple Panthers team with one minute left.
The Disco Girls’ defense was led by Emma Erickson, Sammie Yeager
and Isabella Islava. Camile Christensen blocked a powerful Panther
shot to keep the game close, while Sammie Ludes, Jessica Ochoa,
Kelsey Prater and Rachel Digiambattista played on offense. Leah
Castillo played tough defense for the Panthers and had several keys
steals.
* Pink Panthers vs. Hurricanes
Olivia Sever started off with a pass from Mallory Gyulay to score
the first goal. Caroline Gels and Mallory Gyulay kept the ball at the
Hurricanes’ goal despite a tough Hurricane defense.
In goal, Amanda Dupont, Anna Hancock, Gabby Mangano and Erin Barth
combined efforts with defensive players Hailey Mahaffey, Sabrina
Sanchez to keep the opposing team scoreless. Erin Barth, assisted by
Logan Grovecame, back with a goal in the fourth to secure the Pink
Panther victory.
In girls under-7 play:
* Speckled Gators vs. Dolphins
Scores by the Gators were made by Katie Kearns, Emily Goltz, Emma
Vujnovich and Olivia Jones. Sarah Boese had a few stops in the goal,
while Megan Keys, Paige Tamblyn, and Jacque DeFeo kept the ball out
of their territory. Offensively for the Dolphins, Karly Kilmer,
Delaney Kording and Emily kept the ball up field.
In boys under-7 play:
* The Predators vs. Blue Marlin
The Predators went ahead in the first quarter when Dillon Murphy
slotted the ball into the net from five-yards out. Alex Forman scored
the second goal for the Predators.
Carter Scott and Charlie Stassel anchored the Predators’ defense.
Davis Clement and Alden Burke provided the support to the Predators’
forwards as they tried to extend their lead. Dillon Murphy and Avery
Rowe caused many problems for the Blue Marlins defense until finally
Alex Forman saw his low, hard shot deflect off a defender’s leg into
the goal.
* Salty Sea Dawgs
Salty Sea Dawgs’ Jack Rapillo wasted no time in turning in his
best game of the year, scoring three first-period goals. The defense,
led by Jake Weyrich, Peter Harano, Jordan Teisan, J.D. Dennis and
Kinston Mc Carthy made numerous key stops. Jeremiah Sheldon added a
second-half goal, and the scoring ended on a goal by Sean Korkmaz off
a pass from Andrew Laidlaw.
In girls under-6 play:
* Flamingos vs. Shining Stars
Erika Ellis scored and played strong defense, booting several
balls over the defenders’ heads, while Paige Fults turned back
several offensive drives from the Shining Stars. Julia Ackerman
scored a hat trick, once on an assist from McKenzie Porteous.
Porteous also assisted on Mandy Tapfer’s goal. Madeline Phillips was
in on an assist to Porteous.
* Blue Sharks vs. Pandas
Several Sharks put the ball into the net, including Taylor Craig,
Lauren Vissman, Danielle Wilson and Lily Woodall.
In boys under-6 play:
* Cheetahs vs. Green Dragons
Although still missing James Hodges, the Cheetah offense dominated
both halves. Ashe Deering led the Cheetahs in scoring with five
goals, including one on the first possession of the game. Josh
Jenkins scored his first goal of the season. Chandler Siemonsma moved
the ball and scored a goal, as did Lucas Hodges. Jack McClintock
extended his scoring streak by one, and also keyed the Cheetah
defense, holding off the Dragons until the final moments of the game.
In boys under-5 play:
* Blue Barracuds vs. Green Alligators
Jantzen Fenn and Justin Shollin scored equal career-high goals for
the Barracudas as Patrick Wynn and Kyle Langdon-Weyrich followed up
with dual goals and assists. Noah Christensen supported his blue team
as well with offensive attacks and defense.
* Green Bulldogs vs. Flaming Tigers
Ben Zehnder, Joe Skinner and Billy Shannon each scored goals for
the Green Bulldogs in their game against the Flaming Tigers. Jack
Brennan and Eann McKasson assisted on the goals and played solid
defense.
* Riding Giants
Riding Giants played their best game of the season with Connor
Turnbow-Lindenstadt leading the charge with five goals and aggressive
defensive play. Corbin Joyce, Chandler Hunt and Jacob Duehring scored
as well. Matt Torres and Jake Smith made solid passes.
