Costa Mesa girls win Golden West

The Costa Mesa High girls cross country team clinched first place in

the Golden West League, winning the league finals Wednesday at

Central Park in Huntington Beach.

Junior Jasmine Day placed second overall in 18 minutes, 40 seconds

on the three-mile course. Kyla Flores (fifth in 19:05), Emily Cotton

(11th in 19:56), Jenny Sparks (12th in 19:59) and Nilani Duarte (15th

in 20:15) were the top finishers for the Mustangs (6-0 in league).

The Mesa girls advance to the CIF Southern Section Division III

preliminaries Nov. 13th at Mt. San Antonio College.

The Mesa boys (2-4) team placed fifth in the league with Luis

Genis (18th in 16:55), Mitch Friedmann (24th in 17:19), Ryan Lacy

(26th in 17:24), John Zapata (27th in 17:46) and Luis Munoz (31st in

18:06) scoring.

The Estancia boys (4-2) finished third in the league. Ernesto

Castaneda (15:51 in 15:51), Alex Cahuantzi (eighth in 16:26), Alan

Reza (11th in 16:28), Hector Gomez (15th in 16:44) and Jose Garcia

(21st in 17:02) were the top finishers.

The Estancia girls finished fourth in the league with Sidney

Barloon (sixth in 19:07), Eunice Rodriguez (19th in 20:43), Paula

Negrete (21st in 20:52), Lucy Leon (26th in 21:05) and Okairy Lomeli

(27th in 21:06) rounding out the top runners.

Hernandez scores winner

* SOCCER: The host Vanguard University men’s soccer team, ranked

No. 11 in the NAIA, forged past No. 16 Fresno Pacific, 1-0, in a

Region II first-round game Wednesday.

After 85 minutes of scoreless play, the Lions were awarded a free

kick from just outside the penalty box on the left side and senior

forward Jose Hernandez ripped a shot that curved around the defensive

wall and inside the near post, past diving Sunbird goalie Josh

Ollenberger.

Vanguard (16-4) held off the Sunbirds (15-3-1) in the final 4:45

to earn a second-round game at 1 p.m. Saturday at top-seeded Azusa

Pacific. VU goalkeeper Tommaso Bianchi recorded three saves en route

to his 10th shutout of the season.

Chin leads UCI women

* GOLF: The UC Irvine women’s golf team finished fourth out of 17

teams with a record-setting performance at the Las Vegas Founders

Collegiate Showdown at Anthem Country Club in Henderson, Nevada.

Freshman Jane Chin shot a career- and tournament-low 67 in the

final round to help the Anteaters move into fourth place with a

54-hole total of 892 (307-296-289), the best 54-hole total all-time

for the Anteaters. The team’s final round of 289 is the lowest

18-hole score in school history.

Chin tied USC’s Veronica Felibert, who also shot 67 in the final

round, for the day’s low honors. The freshman shot a career-low 219

(76-76-67), finishing seventh, her second career top 10 showing.

Chin’s 67 is a team low for the season and matches the program’s

all-time low of 67 set by Walialak Satarak Oct. 9, 2001 at the Omni

Interlocken Golf Course in Broomfield, Colo.

Freshman Selanee Henderson placed 17th at 223 (74-72-77), while

junior Angela Won shot 1-under 71 on the final 18 to move to 20th at

224 (79-74-71). Junior Carling Cho was 27th after carding a 226

(78-74-74) and freshman Kim Lorenzana was 73rd at 240 (84-78-78).

UNLV’s Hwanhee Lee was the only player to shoot under par for the

tournament with a 215 (74-71-70), earning medalist honors.

Tars rip Woodbridge

* WATER POLO: Clay Jorth and Telford Cottam scored four goals each

for the Newport Harbor High boys water polo team Wednesday as the

host Sailors defeated Woodbridge, 16-5, in a Sea View League finale.

The Sailors (16-10, 4-1 in league) will play in the CIF Southern

Section Division I playoffs next week.

McKittrick qualifies

* GOLF: Corona del Mar High sophomore Katie McKittrick finished at

158 to secure second place in the Pacific Coast League girls golf

championship Tuesday at El Prado and advance to the CIF Southern

Section individual championships.

University’s Jasmine Winters carded a 155 for medalist honors. The

top two qualify for the CIF individuals Nov. 11 at Mission Lakes

Country Club in Desert Hot Springs.

CdM senior Katie Albright shot 161 and finished third overall,

while teammate Jonna Kim shot 173 and placed 11th.

In a Pacific Coast makeup match Tuesday, the Sea Kings lost to

University, 423-439, but defeated Northwood (451) in a tri-meet. CdM

advances to the CIF team qualifying tournament Friday at El Prado at

the Chino Creek course at 8 a.m.

Sea Kings advance

* TENNIS: All three Corona del Mar High doubles teams won in the

first and second rounds of the Pacific Coast League individual girls

tennis championships Wednesday at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Jill Damion-Alexandra Walters, Miranda Young-Rachael Miller and

Hayley Young-Jami Steele all swept their best-of-three sets and

advanced to today’s semifinals at Costa Mesa at 1 p.m.

Damion and Walters face off against teammates Miranda Young and

Miller, while Steele and Hayley Young face Tesoro’s sister duo of

Roxanne and Sierra Ellison.

Casserly takes third

* TENNIS: Newport Harbor High senior Jill Casserly took third

place in the Sea View League individual girls tennis championships

Wednesday at Newport Harbor.

She lost to Laguna Hills’ Brittany Rosen, 6-0, 6-0 in the

semifinals, but won in a playoff for third, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.

OCC takes down Tigers

* VOLLEYBALL: The Orange Coast College women’s volleyball team

defeated host Riverside, 30-21, 30-16, 30-17, Wednesday in Orange

Empire Conference play.

Chontol Palomino, Donka Drozd and Melissa Zapiain each had 11

kills and Nicole Powers had three aces and 28 digs to lead the

Pirates (12-3, 8-2 in the OEC).

OCC plays Friday at Irvine Valley College.

Saints rally past Eagles

* VOLLEYBALL: The Estancia High girls volleyball team lost to host

Santa Ana, 18-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-18, 15-5, Wednesday in Golden West

League play.

The Eagles (8-8, 6-5 in league) were led by senior Hillary Larson

with 13 kills, while sophomore Jaye Hellmich had 11 kills and seven

blocks.

Estancia hosts Costa Mesa Friday in a league finale.

San Clemente tops Tars

* SURFING: The Newport Harbor High surf team fell to 1-2 after

being defeated by San Clemente, 103-65, at San Clemente’s T Street.

Newport lost three of the four events on a day that saw chest-high

wave conditions.

The one event won by Newport was the bodyboard competition. Matt

Kretschmar and Harry Tully took second and third places,

respectively, in leading their team to an 11-10 victory.

The sole first-place finisher for Newport was Erica Hosseini, who

handily won the girls short board with an average wave score of 5.8.

Her individual efforts were not enough as the team lost, 12-9.

Vanguard swept

* VOLLEYBALL: The visiting Vanguard University women’s volleyball

team lost to California Baptist, 30-26, 30-19, 30-17, Tuesday in

Golden State Athletic Conference play.

Freshman outside hitter Kim Wynn led the Lions (22-11, 9-8 in the

GSAC) with 10 kills and 16 digs, while junior Sevryn Demos also had

16 digs.

Anteaters fall, 2-1

* SOCCER: The UC Irvine men’s soccer team lost, 2-1, to visiting

Cal Poly San Luis ObispoopMustangs (5-5-4, 2-4-1) in a Big West match

Wednesday night at Anteater Stadium.

The Anteaters (6-10-0, 2-4-0 in the Big West) outshot the

Mustangs, 12-1, but were unable to knock in a goal in the scoreless

first half.

Junior Kit Vitagliano broke the scoreless tie with a blast from 20

yards out on the right side at the 57:54 mark. Nikhil Erlebach tied

the game for the Mustangs (5-5-4, 2-4-1) as he squeezed the ball

through a crowd after collecting it at the top of the box in the 68th

minute. Matthew Robinson scored the eventual game-winner at the 74:45

mark as he knocked a loose ball inside the six-yard box past the

keeper.

UCI men picked 7th

* BASKETBALL: The UC Irvine men’s basketball team, which did not

make the eight-team Big West Conference tournament a year ago, has

been picked to finish seventh in the 10-team conference in separate

polls by the coaches and media released Wednesday.

The Anteaters were 11-17 last season, finishing tied for eighth in

the Big West with a 6-12 conference record.

Coach Pat Douglass’ squad, which opens the exhibition season

Saturday at home against Simon Fraser University from British

Columbia, did not have a player among the six-player preseason

all-conference team.

UCI’s returning starters include senior post Greg Ethington, as

well as junior guards Ross Schraeder and Jeff Gloger.

The UCI women’s team (6-20, 5-13 last season) is eighth in the

coaches’ poll and ninth in the media poll.
