City gets a new look

Things are going to be a little different around here.

Jane Egly was voted in, Wayne Baglin out. Of course, it’s not

uncommon for Baglin to be on again, off again. He first ran for City

Council in 1972 but lost. He was elected to the council in 1978, left

for an overseas job, and then was reelected in 1994. He lost the seat

in 1998 and was reelected again in 2000.

So we won’t be saying goodbye just yet.

For now, congratulations are owed to Egly and Cheryl Kinsman.

On the school board, things will be very much the same. It

certainly will be interesting, considering the amount of anger that

has cropped up during a controversy about talks with MTV and more

recently a contentious baseball fence. Apparently El Hathaway and Jan

Vickers’ records were strong enough to keep them in the residents’

trust column.

Now we won’t neglect to mention Martha Anderson and Lara Parisi.

The women were uncontested but have been elected to office all the

same, and it’s nice to know the positions will be held by

well-respected Lagunans.

The women were lucky not to have to endure some of what the other

candidates dealt with. Was it the negative campaigning by Citizens

for Good, Honest Government and Civility in Local Politics and

Therefore Against Wayne Baglin that did Baglin in? It’s hard to be

sure, but we hope people went by their own knowledge of Baglin’s

history rather than depending on hit pieces.

Whatever the incentive, the masses came out to vote. They had

their say and now the community will move forward and continue to

keep an eye on our leaders, appreciating them when they do it right

and speaking up when something seems wrong.

We will start by looking into the funding of the campaigns. How

much and from whom? It may all be benign information, it may be

controversial. Either way, we’ll get it out there.
