Corona del Mar clinches league title

The Corona del Mar High girls volleyball team defeated host Laguna

Beach, 25-20, 25-20, 29-27, Thursday to capture the Pacific Coast

League title.

Lindsey Ensign had 14 kills and four blocks, while Jordan Smith

had 11 kills and 14 digs for the Sea Kings (21-5, 9-1 in league).

Breanne Ogden and Britta Nielsen added 12 digs and Traci Lawson

had 15 assists as the Sea Kings swept the rival Breakers.

CdM hosts Newport Harbor today at 6 p.m.

Damion-Walters win

* TENNIS: Jill Damion and Alexandra Walters rallied in the first

set of the girls tennis championship match on their way to winning

the Pacific Coast League doubles champions Thursday at Costa Mesa

Tennis Center.

Down, 2-3, in the final to Tesoro’s sister team of Roxanne Ellison

and Sierra Ellison, Damion and Walters won 10 games in a row, the

first time playing together, to become league champions.

Damion-Walters defeated teammates Miranda Young and Rachael

Miller, 6-1, 6-3, in the semifinals. They defeated Ellison-Ellison,

6-3, 6-0.

Sailors return favor

* VOLLEYBALL: The Newport Harbor High girls volleyball team took

revenge on an Oct. 19 Woodbridge sweep, defeating the visiting

Warriors, 25-15, 25-17, 17-25, 27-25, Thursday in a Sea View League

finale.

The Sailors (12-11, 8-2 in league) finished second in league

behind the 9-1 Warriors.

Senior co-captain Kiley Hall led Newport with 21 kills, one ace and eight digs, while sophomore Coco Yokoyama had 10 kills, three

aces and six digs.

Senior Taryn Tarnutzer had four kills, three blocks and 18 assists

and junior Bryana Carey had seven kills and two blocks.

The Sailors visit Corona del Mar today at 6 p.m.

Newport wins again

* WATER POLO: Newport Harbor High senior goalkeeper Michael

Robinson made 11 saves and his teammates provided the same number of

goals in an 11-6 nonleague boys water polo victory over visiting The

Bishop’s of La Jolla Thursday that concludes the Sailors’ regular

season.

Jovan Vranes and freshman Nate Castillo led the Sailors (17-10) to

their third straight victory in as many days with three goals apiece.

Brett Auer added two while Telford Cottam and brothers Clinton and

Clay Jorth each tallied one score for Newport, ranked fifth in CIF

Southern Section Division I.

Playoff pairings will be announced Monday. The Sailors will begin

the postseason Wednesday.

OCC to play for third

* WATER POLO: The Orange Coast College women’s water polo team

lost, 9-2, to Golden West on Thursday at Cypress College in a

semifinal Orange Empire Conference tournament game, and will play

Fullerton for third place at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Laura DeMeneces and Kimberly Yarina scored the two goals for the

Pirates (18-9, 5-2 in the OEC).

Golden West built a 4-0 lead by first period’s end and the Pirates

weren’t able to recover. Lindsay Williams had five goals for Golden

West (22-5, 6-1).

Sage secures second

* TENNIS: Sarah Geocaris lost just two games in sweeping her three

singles sets and the Sage Hill School girls tennis team doubled up

host St. Margaret’s, 12-6, to conclude Academy League play Thursday.

Stephanie Langer claimed two sets while all three doubles teams

took two of three sets for Sage Hill (11-6, 10-2 in league), which

finished second to league-champion Fairmont. Lightning doubles teams

featured Sarah Flynn/Alle Hsu, Salen Andrews/Carissa Cummings and

Grace Graham/Rachel Heyler.

Flynn and Hsu enter today’s league doubles championships at the

Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club as the No. 2 seed while Geocaris and

Langer are seeded third and fourth, respectively, in singles.

Singles play begins at 1 p.m. today while doubles gets underway at

2:30 p.m.

Semifinals in singles and doubles will start at noon Saturday

followed by the finals in each division at 3:30 that afternoon. The

finalists from singles and doubles advance to the CIF Southern

Section individual championships.

Sage finishes 2nd

* VOLLEYBALL: The Sage Hill School girls volleyball team defeated

visiting Brethren Christian, 23-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-22, Thursday and

finished second to St. Margaret’s in the Academy League.

Cat Dailey had 27 kills and eight blocks for the Lightning (14-6,

8-2 in league), while Vista Murphy had nine kills, six aces and 12

digs. Senior Vicky Gutierrez, playing in her last league game, had

five digs.

Lions roll in opener

* BASKETBALL: Kevin Dalafu scored 16 points to lead four players

in double figures as Vanguard University opened its season with a

100-60 victory over visiting Simpson Thursday in the opening round of

the Golden State Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Classic.

Brian Roberts and Curt Watson each came off the bench to score 14

and 13 points, respectively, while Brian Kim added 13 for the Lions,

who shot 53% from the field (37 of 70) and 50% from three-point range

(10 of 20). Twelve different Lions scored.

Vanguard hosts 12th-ranked Lubbock Christian at 7:30 p.m. today in

the second of the three-day tournament.

LMU edges Anteaters

* WATER POLO: Loyola Marymount, the nation’s sixth-ranked men’s

water polo team, ended No. 5-ranked UC Irvine’s five-game winning

streak with a 7-6 nonconference triumph Thursday at LMU.

Endre Rex-Kiss scored four goals, including the game-winner, to

help erase a 6-5 UCI lead.

Junior Dreason Barry scored with 39 seconds left in the third

quarter to put the visitors on top, 6-5, before the Lions’ Brian

McShane tied the game on a goal with 5:29 remaining in the fourth

period.

Rex-Kiss notched the game-winner with 1:54 left in the game.

Senior Rick Merlo led the Anteaters (13-9) with four goals and

junior goalie Joe Wynne had four saves.

LMU goalie Ian Elliott recorded 13 saves as the Lions improved to

16-8.

UCI hosts No. 7 UC Santa Barbara Sunday at noon in a Mountain

Pacific Sports Federation game.

Theriot wins Heisman

* FOOTBALL: Newport Harbor High senior Trevor Theriot has been

named the state winner for the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.

Theriot is a standout outside linebacker and leads the Sailors

with 768 rushing yards. Theriot holds a 4.0 GPA and is being

recruited by most Pac-10 universities.

Theriot joins Temecula Valley’s Jessica Thompson as California’s

top student-athletes. They will vie with the other state winners

including the District of Columbia for the top male and female

winners in the nation. By the end of November the 102 state winners

will be narrowed to only 12 contenders.

Created in 1994, the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award recognizes

outstanding, well-rounded students.
