Vanguard ekes out victory
The Vanguard University men’s basketball team begins its season 2-0
after knocking off No. 12-ranked Lubbock Christian University, 68-67,
Friday night in the round-robin Golden State Athletic Conference
Classic at Vanguard.
Vanguard took the lead and never trailed in the opening 20
minutes, and the Lions went into halftime up, 39-27. Eight Lions
combined to shoot 55.2 percent from the field (16-29) and Vanguard
outrebounded the Chaparrals, 25-11.
The Chaparrals made a slow but steady comeback and came to within
one point with 58 seconds remaining, but Vanguard held on in the
final seconds as the clock ran out.
Brian Kim led the Lions with 18 points, while Tim Burnette, Kevin
Dalafu and Antquon James had 12 each.

UCI’s Morton advances
* TENNIS: UC Irvine senior Brian Morton reached the semifinals in
singles and the quarterfinals in doubles with three victories Friday
in the 48th Southern California Intercollegiates at the Los Angeles
Tennis Club.
The unseeded Morton, a former Corona del Mar High standout, downed
USC’s Brian Wright, 6-0, 6-3, in the round of 16 before ousting
Mathieu Dehuane of UCLA, 7-6 (10-8), 6-3, in the quarterfinals.
Morton faces top-seeded Luben Pampoulov of UCLA in the semifinals
at 11 a.m.
Morton and partner Ryusuke Kashiwabara defeated UC Santa Barbara’s
Hagen Brodie and Anders Dalskov, 8-5, in the round of 32. The duo
will face Billy Mertz and Luigi Dagord from the University of Alabama
in the round of 16 at 1 p.m. today.
Ex-Tar Mackey triples
* SWIMMING: UC Irvine swimmers Tom Randall and Lara Bjargardottir,
along with diver Jackie Jones, each won one event while former
Newport Harbor High standout Nicole Mackey claimed three events in
the Big West Conference Shootout at the Anteater Aquatics Complex
Friday.
Mackey, who attends the University of Hawaii, paced the field in
the women’s 100 backstroke (55.67), 200 back (2:01.18) and 100
butterfly (56.37).
Randall won the men’s 50-meter freestyle in 20.94 while Jones
claimed the women’s 3-meter dive with 292.20. Bjargardottir won the
women’s 200 breaststroke in 2:19.90.
The UCI women defeated UC Davis (94-46), Air Force (114-26) and
Pepperdine (113-27), but lost to Hawaii (106-34). The Anteater men
topped UC Davis (99-41) and Air Force (94-46), but also fell to
Hawaii (106-34).
The event continues at 10 a.m. today.
Sea Kings moving on
* GOLF: The Corona del Mar High girls golf team advanced to the
CIF Southern Section championships for the first time after its
third-place finish at Friday’s CIF Southern Division team
championships on the Chino Creek course at El Prado Golf Course in
Chino.
Katie McKitterick led all Sea Kings with a 4-over-par 77 while
teammates Katie Albright (84), Caitlin McDonald (87), Michelle
Albrecht (94), Jonna Kim (96) and Maggie Nelson (102) contributed to
CdM’s 438 team score. CdM Coach Mike Starkweather said the 438 is the
lowest 18-hole team score in program history.
The Sea Kings’ Pacific Coast League rivals University (second at
435) and Northwood (fourth at 447), along with first-place San
Clemente (400), all advanced from the 25-team field. Newport Harbor
finished seventh at 454.
The Southern Section championships will be held at 9 a.m. Monday
at Las Posas Country Club in Camarillo. The top four teams from the
16-squad field will then advance to the CIF/Women’s Southern
California Golf Association championship at the SCGA course on Nov.
15.
McKitterick, who finished second in the league individual
tournament, will compete in the CIF Southern California girls golf
championships Thursday at Mission Lakes Country Club in Desert Hot
Springs.
Mesa downs Eagles in 3
* VOLLEYBALL: Tracy Bjelland tallied eight kills while Lindsey
Navarrette added seven to pace the Costa Mesa High girls volleyball
team to a 25-17, 25-14, 25-15 victory over host Estancia in the final
Golden West League and regular-season contest for both squads Friday.
Mesa (9-5, 8-4 in league) secured third place in league, but more
importantly, guaranteed itself a berth in the CIF Southern Section
Division III-A playoffs for the second time in three seasons.
Estancia finished 8-9, 6-6.
Senior Jackie Havens tallied 21 assists with four aces while
Bjelland chipped in 13 digs and four aces, too.
Playoff pairings will be announced Sunday.
Sage sends 4 to semis
* TENNIS: Sage Hill School’s Sarah Geocaris and Stephanie Langer
each swept both of their opponents Friday to reach today’s semifinals
of the Academy League girls individual tennis championships at the
Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club. Sage’s second-seeded doubles team of
Sarah Flynn and Alle Hsu also won in straight sets to reach the
doubles semifinals.
Geocaris, the third seed, defeated Chrissy Allen, 6-1, 6-1, before
downing Fairmont’s Anya Walinowicz, 6-5, 6-2, in the quarterfinals.
The fourth-seeded Langer defeated Brethren Christian’s Margaret
Nkansah, 6-0, 6-0, before posting a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Capistrano
Valley Christian’s Kristina Drzymkowski in the quarterfinals.
Geocaris faces No. 2-seed Carissa Aboubakare of Fairmont while
Langer duels top-seeded Bianca Aboubakare, Carissa’s sister, in the
semifinals, scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.
Flynn and Hsu downed Annie Jung and Eunice Lee (Fairmont), 6-0,
6-0, before defeating teammates Grace Graham and Rachel Heyler, 6-3,
6-1.
Flynn and Hsu face Hannah Harris and Debbie Filipovich of Capo
Valley Christian in today’s semifinals at 1 p.m.
The singles final will be held at 2:30 and the doubles at 4 p.m.
Tars place seventh
* GOLF: Natalie Draganza, fresh off winning her third straight Sea
View League girls golf individual title, carded an 8-over-par 81 to
lead Newport Harbor High to a seventh-place finish at the CIF
Southern Division team championships Friday on the Chino Creek course
at El Prado Golf Course in Chino.
Kayleigh Horn shot 85 while Ashley Jacobs (94), Katie McKay (96)
and Kendall Horn (98) scored for Newport (454), which finished seven
strokes more than Northwood, which secured the fourth and final spot
into the CIF Southern Section girls golf championships on Monday.
San Clemente took top honors among the 25-team field with a 400
while Corona del Mar qualified following a 438.
Draganza will compete in the CIF Southern California girls golf
championship Thursday at Mission Lakes Country Club in Desert Hot
Springs.
OCC battles for third
* WATER POLO: Orange Coast College will play today at 1 p.m. in
the third-place game of the Orange Empire Conference men’s water polo
tournament at Cypress College
The Pirates, the No. 5 seed in the six-team tournament, beat No. 4
Santa Ana, 12-9, Friday in the opening round and lost to No. 1 seed
Golden West, 17-2, in the semifinals.
A five-goal third quarter broke a 5-5 halftime tie with Santa Ana.
Estancia High graduate Paul Collier scored four goals in the game to
lead the Pirates. Alex Avetoom registered three goals, and Todd
Swanson and Austin Price each added two more scores. Goaltender Brett
Hellmich notched nine saves.
Golden West cruised to 14-0 lead after three quarters for the easy
Rustlers win. Price and Nick Chambers scored for OCC to avoid the
shutout. Orange Coast could only muster six shots on goal compared to
Golden West’s 20.
The Pirates face No. 2 Riverside today in the third-place game.
OCC lost to the Tigers, 16-6, Oct. 27.

OCC shuts out Tigers
* SOCCER: The Orange Coast College women’s soccer team defeated
Riverside 2-0 in Orange Empire Conference play Friday.
Sarah Ronquillo scored in the 24th minute and Elizabeth Terry
scored in the 29th minute for the Pirates (11-4-3, 9-4-2 in the OEC).
Coast, Dons tie again
* SOCCER: Miguel Ochoa’s header off a pass from Will Sanchez in
the final minutes allowed the Orange Coast College men’s soccer team
to tie host Santa Ana, 2-2, in an Orange Empire Conference match
Friday.
Coast trailed, 2-0, at halftime, but Jose Serpas scored his
team-leading 11th goal in the 69th minute to cut the lead to 2-1. Eli
Solis assisted. Ochoa’s goal secured the second tie between the teams
this season.
Trent Painter stopped a blast from the Dons’ Edgar Sanchez late in
the contest for one of his seven saves for Coast (9-4-5, 7-2-4 in the
OEC).
The Dons are 14-0-4, 10-0-3.
‘Eaters’ Choe honored
* GOLF: UC Irvine junior Jay Choe has been named Big West
Conference Athlete of the Month in men’s golf.
Choe finished second in the Club Glove Intercollegiate at Saticoy
Country Club in Somis, Calif., Oct. 11-12. His 54-hole total was
2-under-par 214 (72-68--74).
