Mustangs claim water polo crown
The Costa Mesa High boys water polo team defeated Troy, 10-5, in the
championship game of the Tustin tournament Saturday at Tustin High.
Senior Adam Douglas scored six goals in the title game, in which
the Mustangs outscored the Warriors, 5-0, in the fourth quarter to
pull away.
Costa Mesa junior Kyle Thorsness scored seven goals to pace a 15-5
semifinal win over Laguna Hills Saturday.
The Golden West League champion Mustangs, ranked No. 10 in CIF
Southern Section Division II, improved to 19-5.

* CROSS COUNTRY: Orange Coast College’s Kellen Acosta and Ludi
Valdez each won their respective men’s and women’s individual titles
while both Pirate squads claimed team titles at the Commission on
Athletics Southern California cross country championships Saturday at
Fairbanks Park in San Luis Obispo.
The Pirate men and women each claimed team titles for the third
straight year, this time by a wide margin. The OCC women finished
with 48 points while Riverside came in second with 114.
On the men’s side, Coast, which placed three runners in the top
four, tallied 38 points to second-place San Bernardino Valley’s 133.
Acosta finished in 22:27 while former Estancia High standout
Humberto Rojas took third in 22:38. Jose Casillas finished fourth in
22:47.
Valdez, also a former Estancia runner, took first in 16:04 on the
women’s side.
Other Coast men finishers included Jason Valenzuela (10th in
23:20), Matt Staggs (20th in 23:53), Jesus Salazar (49th in 24:32)
and Patrick Fitzgerald (56th in 24:40).
OCC’s Emilie Vo (17:04) placed sixth overall on the women’s side
while teammate Gaby Santana finished eighth in 17:06. Nor Hernandez
(14th in 17:20), Jewel Buttler (21st in 17:43), Rebecca Powell (25th
in 17:48) and Jenny Sliwa (29th in 17:56) contributed for Coast.
Both Pirate squads will compete in the state finals Nov. 20 at
Woodward Park in Fresno.
‘Eater duo in final
* TENNIS: UC Irvine seniors Brian Morton and Ryusuke Kashiwabara
won two men’s tennis matches Saturday to advance to today’s doubles
final at the Southern California intercollegiates at the Los Angeles
Tennis Club.
Morton, a Corona del Mar High product, and Kashiwabara, the No. 4
seed, defeated Billy Mertz and Luigi D’Agord from Alabama, 8-2, in
the quarterfinals.
The UCI twosome then topped BYU’s Nima Roshan and Jose Luis
Lechuga, 9-8 (8-6 in the tiebreaker) to advance to today’s 2 p.m.
title clash against UCLA’s top-seeded Alberto Francis and Kris
Kwinta.
Morton, beaten by UCLA senior Luben Pampoulov, 7-6, 6-0, in
Saturday’s singles semifinal, teamed with former Anteater Jonathan
Endrikat to win the doubles crown at this tournament two years ago.
Pirates finish third
* WATER POLO: The Orange Coast College women’s water polo team
defeated Fullerton, 6-3, in the third-place game of the Orange Empire
Conference tournament Saturday at Cypress College.
Freshman Ann Marie Fisher scored three goals, while Erin Harvey,
Laura DeMeneces and Lianne Todisco each had one goal for the Pirates
(19-9).
Freshman Kelly Dargel had five saves for OCC.

UCI’s Jones doubles
* SWIMMING AND DIVING: UC Irvine freshman diver Jackie Jones
continued to sparkle on the second and final day of the Big West
Conference men’s and women’s swimming and diving shootout Saturday at
the Anteater Aquatics Complex.
Jones won the women’s one-meter and three-meter diving events in
Pool A to produce UCI’s only individual wins. She also won on the
three-meter board Friday.
Hawaii sophomore Nicole Mackey, a former Newport Harbor High
standout, won the 200-yard backstroke in 2 minutes, 1.23 seconds, and
was second in the 200 individual medley (2:04.21).
Four Anteaters earned second-place showings, including freshman
Chelsea Negata (23.93 in the women’s 50 freestyle) and freshman Tom
Randall (21.24 in the men’s 50 free).
Sophomore Daniel Simonson was second in the 200 breaststroke
(2:07.2) and senior Evan Mitchell was second in men’s three-meter
diving.
Allen Moheimani (men’s one- and three-meter diving) and Eddie
Frazo (1:53.78 in the men’s 100 butterfly and 1:51.31 in the 200
back) led UCI’s third-place finishers.
Also third for UCI were: Duke Krautim (1:55.2 in the men’s 200
I.M.); Franny Brittle (women’s one-meter diving); Eric Reilly (46.34
in the men’s 100 free); and Lara Bjargardottir (2:20.02 in the
women’s 200 breaststroke).
The UCI women earned team wins over UC Santa Barbara and the
University of San Diego, while falling to Hawaii and Washington.
The UCI men were defeated by Washington, Hawaii and UCSB.
Fullen makes a stand
* WATER POLO: Corona del Mar High senior Brittany Fullen made
eight saves in two games as Team Graffiti went 1-0-1 to open play in
the third annual Speedo Top 40 Festival at the USA Water Polo
National Aquatic Center in Los Alamitos Saturday. Former CdM standout
Christina Hewko, who now attends Stanford, scored two goals for the
United States women’s junior national team [Team Aster] in its 7-7
tie with Livewire. The tournament concludes today.
Lions sweep Azusa
* VOLLEYBALL: Sonrisa Peace tallied a match-high 14 kills while
Kim Wynn added 11 to help the host Vanguard University women’s
volleyball team snap a two-match losing streak with a 30-23, 30-24,
31-29 Golden State Athletic Conference victory over Azusa Pacific
Saturday.
With the win, the Lions (23-11, 10-8 in the GSAC) moved into a tie
for fourth place in the conference with two matches remaining.
Marissa Cothran amassed 31 assists while Sevryn Demos and Keri
DeHaas had 15 and 14 digs, respectively for the winners.
‘Eaters tie for third
* GOLF: The UC Irvine men’s golf team tied Long Beach State for
third place in the Del Walker Intercollegiate tournament that
concluded Friday at Virginia Country Club in Long Beach.
Two Anteater players finished in the top five as sophomore Brian
Edick tied for third at 2-under-par 211 (70-71-70) while freshman
Garrett Sapp placed fifth at even-par 213 (69-74-70).
UCI junior Jay Choe was 28th at 222 (71-73-78), freshman Kenny Kim
placed 32nd at 223 (72-73-78) and junior Ryne Rindfleisch finished
50th at 229 (80-74-75).
Lamar won the 12-team tournament with a 54-hole total of 862. UCI
and Long Beach State each scored 866.
Denver’s Barrett Jarosch was the medalist with a three-round score
of 4-under 209 (70-74-65).
The tournament concluded the fall schedule for UCI, which recorded
top-five finishes in three of the six events. UCI returns to
competition in the PING-Arizona Intercollegiate tournament at Arizona
National Golf Club in Tucson Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.
Long Beach downs UCI
* VOLLEYBALL: Senior outside hitter Kelly Wing tallied a
match-high 27 kills and 17 digs, but it was not enough as the UC
Irvine women’s volleyball team fell to host Long Beach State, 30-18,
33-31, 30-32, 30-25, in a Big West Conference match Saturday.
Trisha White (16), Sami Cash (11) and Amanda Vazquez (10) all
tallied kills for the Anteaters (16-7, 9-5 in conference), who came
in riding a three-match winning streak.
Alexis Crimes led the 49ers (18-4, 10-4) with 19 kills followed by
Makini Thompson with 18. Long Beach improved to 13-1 at home this
season.
Dream season ends
* SOCCER: The Vanguard University men’s soccer team ended its
finest season in school history with a 5-2 loss to host Azusa Pacific
in a heated battle of the Golden State Athletic Conference champions
in the NAIA Region II semifinals Saturday.
Andriy Budnyy scored two goals to go with three assists for
third-ranked Azusa Pacific (16-1-1), which took a 2-0 lead 20 minutes
into the contest.
Nathan Kramer scored both goals for Vanguard (16-5), with assists
from Matt Hess and Mark Babel.
The game, however, turned ugly in the second half, when eight of
the nine total cards -- two reds and seven cautions -- were handed
out.
OCC men fourth
* WATER POLO: The Orange Coast College men’s water polo team lost
to Riverside, 7-4, in the third-place game of the Orange Empire
Conference tournament Saturday at Cypress College.
Austin Price, Alex Avetoom, Todd Swanson and Paul Collier all
scored goals for the Pirates (6-18).

Highlanders edge UCI
* SOCCER: Luc Harrington scored on a penalty kick in the second
overtime to lift host UC Riverside to a 1-0 Big West Conference men’s
soccer win over UC Irvine Saturday.
Senior Lorne Howlett had five shots and sophomore teammate Brad
Evans had three for UCI (6-11-0, 2-5-0 in conference).
UCI goalie Cameron Rossi made five saves, while UCR ‘keeper
Charles Alamo made six.
UCR improved to 7-8-1, 4-3-1.
UCI’s Barry honored
* WATER POLO: UC Irvine junior Dreason Barry has been named the
Mikasa Co-Player of the Week in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation
men’s water polo.
Barry scored six goals in last weekend’s two victories. He scored
a pair of goals in a 9-7 win over USC and a game-high four in last
Sunday’s 10-6 win over UC San Diego.
