Day leads Cal Poly to title

Sharon Day, a former Costa Mesa three-sport star who is now a

sophomore at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, scored on a penalty kick to

help the Mustangs’ defeat top-seeded UC Santa Barbara, 2-0, to win

their second straight Big West Conference women’s soccer

championship, Sunday at UC Irvine.

The goal, which opened the scoring in the 13th minute, was Day’s

11th of the season, eight more than any other Cal Poly player.

The win gives Cal Poly (11-2-6) an automatic berth into the NCAA

tournament.

Anteaters edge UCSB

* WATER POLO: UC Irvine junior Dreason Barry and sophomore Colin

Mello scored three goals each to lead the No. 5-ranked Anteaters past

No. 7 UC Santa Barbara, 9-8, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation

men’s water polo game Sunday at the Anteater Aquatics Complex.

Sophomore Tim Hutten added two goals as UCI improved to 14-9, 4-2

in the MPSF.

The Anteaters broke a 5-5 halftime tie with a goal by Mello with

4:50 left in the third quarter. They added an extra-man goal by

Hutten with 1:39 remaining in the period.

Senior Cameron Bassett scored with 5:28 left in the fourth quarter

to give UCI an 8-5 lead, but UCSB drew to within 8-7.

Mello gave the Anteaters a 9-7 lead on a power-play score with 53

seconds remaining to seal UCI’s sixth win in its last seven games.

UCI junior goalie Joe Wynne had eight saves.

Ross Sinclair, a sophomore driver out of Newport Harbor High, had

one goal for the Gauchos.

UCI duo loses final

* TENNIS: UC Irvine senior Brian Morton’s bid to win a second

doubles title in three years at the Southern California

intercollegiates, failed Sunday at the Los Angeles Tennis Club.

Morton, a Corona del Mar High product, and Anteater senior Ryusuke

Kashiwabara, the No. 4 seed, fell to top-seeded Alberto Francis and

Kris Swinta from UCLA, 8-6, in the title match.

The Anteaters concluded their fall season and will begin the

dual-match season Jan. 17 when they host Air Force.
