Providing rest and relaxation in a rough spot

Share via

JIM DE BOOM

The Newport Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council has joined with local

Rotary clubs in supporting our troops stationed in Iraq.

During their tour of duty in Iraq, our troops get rest and

relaxation at a site called Freedom Rest, where they spend four to

five days away from duty, resting and enjoying a break from the

action.

The council and local Rotary clubs are seeking donations of

personal items, food and recreation supplies that will be shipped to

Iraq and used at Freedom Rest. Items such as white over-the calf

men’s athletic socks; new knit hats and gloves; baseball caps; new

T-shirts (large and extra large); travel-size containers of foot

powder and baby powder; commercially-sealed lip balm; deodorant;

travel size containers of soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, facial

toner, sunscreen, insect wipes, cortisone bite and sting cream;

individual packets of moist towelettes and baby wipes; mints, breath

strips and gum; Tic-tacs; nail files, clippers and tweezers; combs

and brushes; cotton balls and Q-tips; bandages; toothbrushes;

toothpaste and dental floss; small individual tissue packs;

disposable men’s and women’s razors and anti-bacterial hand gel.

Please, no aerosol cans of any kind.

Also needed are commercially-wrapped individual packets of trail

mix, sunflower seeds, beef jerky, nuts, cookies, candies, energy

bars, etc. (no chocolate); packets of powdered cold beverages -- iced

tea, Kool Aid, etc. -- and cracker snacks; DVDs and music CDs;

disposable cameras; hand-held electronic games; puzzle & word games;

battery-

operated fans and other cooling products; AA batteries; pens,

paper, stationery and envelopes; and travel sewing kits.

Regardless if you support or oppose the efforts in Iraq, our

troops still need our help. If you have items to donate, take them

between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Nov. 20 to the Latter-day Saints Church

at the corner of Dover and 16th Street in Newport Beach. You can also

make a donation to help pay the shipping costs. Make your check

payable and mail to the Newport Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council, P.O.

Box 1175, Newport Beach, CA 92659. For more information, call Jaimie

Day at (949) 642-9460 or e-mail her at jaimieday@yahoo.com.
