True twist for ‘The

OC’ would be perfect

The letters and articles about “The OC” television show have been

as entertaining as the show. Here is my suggestion to make this show

a bit more realistic. Ex-girlfriend of Ryan (Teresa) is an unwed

mother in high school in Chino. Due to her financial resources, she

applies for Aid to Families with Dependent Children. The district

attorney’s office goes looking for Ryan in its paternity action.

Ryan, for once, takes the advice of his lawyer and has a DNA test. It

turns out Ryan is the daddy, even though they were only together that

one night. Ryan gets to spend the next 18 years paying child support,

whether he ever goes back to Chino or not.

Since all of Newport knows where new character “Hot Yard Boy”

lives, a certain neighboring city can now have its own Walk of Fame.

Smith on target on ‘The OC’

I read Steve Smith’s column in Saturday’s Daily Pilot, and I just

wanted to say: “Very good; keep up the good work.” I thoroughly

enjoyed it and agree with everything he said on “The OC.”

Easy answers aren’t

best postelection

Joseph Bell’s postelection “analysis” accepts as gospel the

conclusion, based on a poorly worded exit-poll question, that the

recent election was decided by those who believed “moral values” were

an important issue. The liberal canard, which Bell repeats, is that

Bush was elected by the religious right.

Yet the Democrats strenuously argue that they also highly value

“moral values.” It’s just that their values are different from those

of the religious right. It’s probably true that most of those who

thought the Iraq war was morally right voted for Bush, while those

who believed the war was morally wrong voted for Kerry. Both groups,

on that issue alone, might answer the moral values exit-poll question

the same way.

The now-defunct John Birch Society briefly became a burden to the

Republican Party. It argued that the American electorate was divided

between pro- and anti-communists, just as the liberals now claim it’s

divided along religious lines. Such absurdly simplistic explanations

attract those who believe conspiracy theories explain everything that

doesn’t go their way. Thus, it’s not at all surprising that,

postelection, the far left has evolved into the reincarnation of the

John Birch Society.

The “little lady” in the article about the farmers’ market, the

person who slowed the line to have her watermelon rendered rind-less,

demonstrated not so much a narcissistic personality as plain, old,

garden-variety inconsideration (“Narcissistic customer sours sweetest

goods,” Nov. 9). Her behavior, in fact, was remarkably similar to

that of Maxine Cohen, the article’s author, who, happy to bring her

dog to the market, was also in violation of good sense, if not the

law, as well.

Don’t expect a resident vision at Marinapark

I do not expect the City Council to depend heavily on residents’

suggestions regarding Marinapark. I suspect that the City Council

will probably decide on something that will create a lot of revenue

and not really listen to our concerns about traffic or any of our

other concerns, like water pollution.

Keep Marinapark as is; negotiate with residents

I think Marinapark should be left alone, and maybe we need to

change the lease agreement so that we’re getting more money out of

that trailer park, but we have to be reasonable to the tenants who

live there. We may upgrade the Girl Scout facility or whatever we

need to do, but basically, I think we just need to leave it just like

it is.
