The second-seeded Corona del Mar boys water polo team exploded for

seven third-quarter goals and reached the semifinals of the CIF

Southern Section Division I playoffs following a 16-4 victory over

host Loyola of Los Angeles Tuesday at Loyola Marymount University.

Tom Money and Bryan Buhagiar each scored two of their three goals

in the third quarter as the Sea Kings (20-8) built on a 5-1 halftime

lead.

CdM faces third-seeded Foothill in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Friday

at the William Wollett Jr. Aquatics Center in Irvine.

The Sea Kings had four players tally three goals -- Thomas Pearson

and Kyle Hersh were the other two -- while Tyler Kent added two go

with one apiece from Jacob Murphy and Spencer Pirdy.

Senior goalkeeper Gaston Sanford made 10 saves while Money

finished with a team-high five steals for the Pacific Coast League

champions.

Pearson added three steals while Murphy, Hersh, Pirdy and Walker

Russell each tallied two assists for the winners.

The Cubs finish the season 18-10.

Wolves outmuscle Sailors

* Eric Vreeland finished with a game-high four goals to help boost

the fourth-seeded Harvard-Westlake High boys water polo team to an

8-6 CIF Southern Section Division I quarterfinal victory over Newport

Harbor Tuesday.

Carson Hill and freshman Nate Castillo each scored two goals while

Clay Jorth and Jovan Vranes each tallied one for the Sailors (18-11),

who cut into an 8-4 lead with two scores in the fourth quarter.

The game was tied, 4-4, at halftime. Castillo scored with 55

seconds left in the second quarter to tie it.

The Wolverines (26-4), though, scored three straight in the third

quarter of a game Newport Coach Jason Lynch called “grossly

physical.”

“It was a brutal game that got out of control,” Lynch said. “There

was physical play on both sides. [The Wolverines] are a much bigger

and stronger team than we are.”

Lynch said the Sailors’ specialty, speed, was neutralized by the

small pool.

“The kids played hard, though,” Lynch said. “They left it in the

pool and they battled.”

Senior goalkeeper Michael Robinson made 10 saves and two steals

while Brett Auer, Jorth, Hill and Castillo each tallied one. Auer and

Clinton Jorth each had one assist.
