Marina High senior Jennifer Osborn captured the CIF Southern Section

Individual Finals title by scoring a 3-under-par 68 to win the

section title at Mission Lakes Country Club in Desert Hot Springs.

A week ago, Osborn finished second to Edison senior Jennie Lee at

the Sunset League finals at El Prado Chino Creek Golf Course in Chino

Hills.

Lee’s score of 70 earned her a fifth-place tie at the CIF

individual finals.

In girls’ CIF volleyball, Huntington Beach and Edison each won

their first two matches to advance two Sunset League teams to the

Division II-AA semifinal round.

Huntington improbably road to the division’s Final Four saw the

Oilers, an at-large entry into the playoffs, sweep Mission Valley

League champion Arroyo and Sunbelt League winner Elsinore before

turning away Marmonte League champ Moorpark on Saturday, 25-16,

25-20, 24-26, 25-23.

Huntington faced top-seed Serra League champion Mater Dei Tuesday

night.

Edison, the No. 3 team out of the Sunset League, opened playoff

action with a sweep of Riverside Poly (Ivy League No. 3), then

defeated Cathedral City (Desert Valley No. 3) in four games before

traveling to Santa Barbara (Channel League No. 3) and defeating the

host Dons, 25-12, 25-12, 23-25, 26-24.

Edison took on SeaView League runner-up Newport Harbor Tuesday

night.

The semifinal scores were not available at press time.

The girls’ volleyball finals will be played Friday and Saturday at

Cypress College.

In girls’ CIF tennis, Edison downed host Chaparral, 13-5, in a

Division II first-round match, then came back Saturday to stun

previously undefeated and fourth-seeded Arcadia, 13-5.

The two victories ran Edison’s win streak to six and moved the

Chargers into a Tuesday quarterfinal match with Marlborough.

In beating Chaparral of Temecula, Edison swept in doubles play and

won four points in singles action -- two each by sophomore Brittany

Bass and senior Vali Bone.

Arcadia came to Edison for a second-round matchup as Pacific

League champion and sporting a 21-0 record.

But the Chargers pulled the upset by winning five singles points

-- including Bass sweeping her three opponents by identical 6-1

scores -- and eight of nine points in doubles.

“It was obviously a very big win for us, especially when a couple

of weeks ago it was undetermined which teams would go to CIF from the

Sunset League between us, Huntington and Fountain Valley,” Edison

Coach Nick Friendt said.

“In the Arcadia match, our athleticism was on full display and we

controlled the court positioning battles on the court,” he said. “We

dictated play and points were won and determined from what was coming

off our racquets. The No. 2 team of juniors Vi Truong and Lauren

Okine and No. 3 team of freshmen Melissa Boyer and Shannah Henderson

swept in doubles that day.”

Edison took a 14-8 record into Tuesday’s match against

Marlborough, the No. 5 seed in the tournament.

In boys’ CIF water polo, host Sonora spoiled Huntington Beach’s

first playoff match in 21 years by holding off the Oilers, 12-9, in

overtime, in a Division II first-round match.

The Oilers led, 3-2, after one period, 4-3 at the half and 5-4

after three quarters.

Huntington senior Robert Pusic led all scorers with four goals.
