Jr. Pee Wee Charges take county title
The Huntington Beach Pop Warner program has produced many outstanding
Jr. Pee Wee teams since the early 1970s, and the 2004 team has put
itself at the top of that A-list.
The Jr. Pee Wee Green Chargers shut out the Costa Mesa Mustangs
13-0, at La Mirada High to win the Orange Bowl, which is Orange
County Pop Warner’s championship game.
The Chargers (9-1) brought the league’s best defense into the
contest, pitted against a talented and tough Costa Mesa team, which
had defeated Huntington in the team’s first meeting in league play.
Defense set the tone early.
After a swift punt return set up Costa Mesa deep in Huntington
territory early in the first quarter, the Chargers held the Mustangs
at the 10-yard line in four downs to take over possession.
Huntington’s offense took it from there.
A 25-yard pass from Chris Dubois to Josh Peth on a third-down play
kept Huntington’s drive alive, and then the Chargers’ bruising ground
game took over.
After driving the ball for several first downs behind the
Chargers’ explosive offensive line, Dubois hooked up with Christopher
Ogilvie on a 30-yard pass play for the first touchdown.
Peth ran in the extra point, making the score 7-0 going into the
half.
The Chargers defense -- a stingy defensive line, swarming
linebackers and secondary that was on the move -- dominated second
half play and only allowed Costa Mesa a few first downs.
Huntington’s ground game consumed most of the second half clock
and the Chargers got an insurance touchdown when Ogilvie scored on a
sweep right to seal the win.
The Chargers were not scored upon in four postseason games, in
which they outscored their opponents, 83-0.
During the season, they outscored the opposition, 213-22.
“I attribute the team’s success to a total teamwork ethic,”
Huntington head coach Marc Dubois said. “I know it’s cliche to
attribute teamwork to success, but from day one we knew we didn’t
have superstars. But we did have a hard working group of kids,
coaches, staff and parents who were determined to succeed together.
We didn’t deviate from the plan.”
The Chargers participate Saturday at the Southern California
Regionals, which is the first playoff tournament designed to
determine which team will advance to play in the Pop Warner National
Championship, held in Orlando, Fla., in December, at the Walt Disney
World Resort Wide World of Sports Complex.
Huntington will battle the Vista Bolts Saturday in a 9:00 a.m.
kickoff at Torrey Pines High School.
