Newport extends winning streak to 11
The Region 97 AYSO boys under-13 Newport-Mesa Infinity soccer team
extended its winning streak to 11 games during the first round of
League Cup play in the Coast Soccer League Sunday.
Traveling to San Bernardino for two matches, the Infinity won
their first game, 1-0, over Santa Clarita. The lone goal was scored
by Austin Webster, courtesy of a pass from Erickson Klein. Zac Chocek
blocked what would have been a certain goal to protect the win.
In their second game of the day, the Infinity battled back to tie
Chivas USA of Alta Loma. In both games, Austin Wobrock and Rodrigo
Ruvalcaba played strong for the Infinity.
In girls under-12 play:
* Newport Beach 1, Lake Forest 0 Newport’s strong defenders Erika Page, Megan Case, Kelly Rorden
and Christie Ohlhaver shut down the Lake Forest offense for the 1-0
win. Ava Nelson and Chelsea Barth kept heavy pressure on Lake Forest
by spreading the attack to Nicole Baker, Kathryn Zimmermann, Nellie
Healy and Lauren D’Ippolito.
Meghan Nance had a key save in the fourth quarter for Newport.
With just seconds to go, passes by Brianna Truxton and Emily Boone
led to a Sarah Buckingham goal for the win.
In girls under-11 play:
* Newport 4, Corona Del Mar 1
Newport’s offense, led by Nicole Dinatale, Josie Jogwe, Francesca
Capelinni and Madison Wooters, overpowered Corona del Mar. The
defense, led by Allison Schelin and Ali Hayes, along with Meaghan Kay
and Savanna Gastineau in goal, have held opponents to six goals all
season.
In girls under-10 play:
* Pink Pussycats 5, Gryffindor Seekers 2
Scoring for the Pussycats in Saturday’s playoff action were Casey
Duckworth, Gigi Light, and Courtney Buck. Emily Nall, Meghan Vance,
and Danica Hurley provided midfield support along with Katie Reed at
forward.
* Pink Pussycats 2, Orange Crush 0
The Pussycats shut out the Crush Sunday to secure their move to
the semifinals. Gigi Light and Casey Duckworth assisted goals by
Emily Nall and Courtney Buck. Yvonne Escalera, Meghan Vance, Sarah
Whitney, Jenna Jarvis and Jessica Arnold anchored the defense.
* Pink Pussycats 2, Purple Piranhas 2
Courtney Buck scored for the Pussycats with strong support from
Gigi Light and Emily Nall. Casey Duckworth saved a goal on a header.
Andria Spears played in goal and was supported by Sarah Whitney,
Jessica Arnold and Jenna Jarvis on defense.
* Surf Chicks 3, Green Chihuahuas 0
Shannon Henderson, Seneca Jakosky and Hannah Nance scored the
three goals as the Surf Chicks advance to the semifinals. Goalie Sara
Cluck and halfbacks Louisa Dodge and Brinley Siemonsma held the
Chihuahuas scoreless.
* Surf Chicks 1, Mini Mias 0
Shannon Henderson scored the lone goal for the Surf Chicks.
* Surf Chicks 0, Patriots 0
The defense of Brinley Siemonsma, Hannah Nance and Sara Cluck held
the Patriots to no goals for the game.
* Surf Chicks 1, Mini Mias 0

* Angels
The Angels competed in three playoff games over the weekend,
winning one, tying one and losing one.
The defense was led by Hannah Walker, Caroline Johnson, Julia Frei
and Julia Perry, with Maddison Botteron in goal. The offense was led
by Megan Farley, Reo Nathan, Alice Miller, Cassidy Davis and Samantha
Sanchez. Kelsey Long, Caroline Johnson and Kathryn De La Torre scored
for the Angels.
* Purple Piranhas 2, Gryffindor Seekers 2
The Piranhas kept Seekers’ goalies Katty Ayala and Jane Layton
busy, while the Seekers kept the Piranhas at bay for most of the
game, as the Piranhas finished their season, 10-0-2. Alice Barry,
Anastasia Figueroa and Taylor Hickerson led the defense, while Andie
Strode, Jane Layton and Lea Phillips worked on offense.
* Pink Pussycats 5, Gryffindor Seekers 2
The Gryffindor Seekers’ two goals were made by Kirsten Rohan, with
assists from Analysa Vivanco on the first, and Samantha Stalder on
the second. Seekers’ Andie Strode, Haley Scott, Alice Barry, Lea
Phillips and Anastasia Figueroa played solid defense, with goalie
action by Jane Layton and Katty Ayala. Seekers’ sweepers Dana Jessen
and Taylor Hickerson protected the goal.
* Orange Crush 2, Gryffindor Seekers 2
Gryffindor Seekers’ Kirsten Rohan again came through with two
goals, accompanied the offense of Samantha Stalder, Lea Phillips and
Analysa Vivanco. Seekers’ Andie Strode and Dana Jessen covered
midfield, while Haley Scott and Taylor Hickerson played defense. Jane
Layton and Katty Ayala played in goal.
In boys under-10 play:
* Avalanche 6, Tiger Sharks 0
Nic Sargeant scored six goals on assists from Gage Coffelt, Rory
Fleming, Scott Grew, Sam Jones and Joey Gregory. The defense was
anchored by Parker Martinez, Gordon Lewis and Riley Ricker, with
Kevin Rakestraw and Chris Buchanan in goal.
* Avalanche 2, Patriots 1
Nic Sargeant scored the two goals for the Avalanche with the help
of Gage Coffelt, Sam Jones and Riley Rickerbroke on offense. The
defense was led by Parker Martinez, Kevin Rakestraw, Chris Buchanan,
Joey Gregory, Rory Fleming, Scott Grew and Gordon Lewis
* Avalanche 6, Red Bulls 0
Nic Sargeant scored four goals, while Kevin Rakestraw and Gage
Coffelt scored one each, on assists from Parker Martinez and Sam
Jones. Gordon Lewis, Riley Ricker and Rory Fleming played in
midfield.
* Funky Monkeys
True Tampin, Ellery Sever and Cole Chapin all scored for the
Monkeys in three playoff games over the weekend. Taylor Parks played
in goal, while Sean Cox, Ian Batstone, Kolby Pearson, Michael Reo and
Ian MacInnis played on defense.
The Monkeys advance to the semifinals.
* Patriots 5, Tiger Sharks 1
Max Gamboa and Holden Curren scored for the Patriots, while the
rest of the offense was led by Michal Polasek, Jack Thompson and
Conner Mullin. The defense was led by Michael Shultz, Alex Farrage,
Pierce Ward, Nick Roman, Marco Bruscia and Jack Williamson.
In girls under-8 play:
* Pink Panthers vs. Blue Dolphins
Mallory Gyulay, Erin Barth, Logan Grove, Olivia Sever and Gabby
Mangano all displayed a valiant offensive effort. Holding off the
opposing Dolphins were Amanda Dupont, Anna Hancock, Sabrina Sanchez
and Caroline Gels.
* Purple Panthers vs. Blue Hurricanes
Libby Knight scored the only goal for the Panthers, as Tara
Fuller, Kira Wandrocke, Leah Castillo and Rachel Whitelegge played on
defense. The offense was led by Kappy Fuller, Carlee Kapana, McKenzie
Stephens and Ryan Moncrief.
In boys under-7 play:
* Predators vs. Jaguars
Charlie Stassel and Alex Forman, off assists by Dillon Murphy,
scored for the Predators, while Alden Burke, Shane Mitchell, Joey
Moddelmog, Davis Clement and Avery Rowe played the midfield.
* Salty Sea Dawgs
Peter Harano, J.D. Dennis, Jeremiah Sheldon and Sean Korkmaz
scored for the Dawgs, while Jack Rapillo, Andrew Laidlaw, Kingston
McCarthy and Jake Weyrich led on offense and defense.
In girls under-6 play:
* Flamingos vs. Purple Jaguars
Paige Fults, Erika Ellis, Julia Ackerman and McKenzie Porteous
scored goals for the Flamingos, while Kate McAllister and Madeline
Phillips assisted on both ends.
In boys under-6 play:
* Cheetahs vs. Blue Lightning
Jack McClintock scored with the help of James Hodges, Joshua
Jenkins, Chandler Siemonsma, Ashe Deering and Jon Hodges.
In boys under-5 play:
* Stingrays vs. Chili Peppers
Jagger Mitchell led the defense, while the offense of Jake
Bashore, Joshua Gehlke, Cameron Weiss, Jake Edler and Pasha
Dastmalchi paced the offense.
* Blue Barracudas vs. Yellow King Cobras
Patrick Wynn scored while Justin Shollin, Jantzen Fenn, Noah
Christensen, Kyle Langdon-Weyrich and Brandon Rivera assisted on both
ends.
* Green Bulldogs vs. Fireballs
Assists by Jack Brennan and Billy Shannon enabled Ben Zehnder and
Joe Skinner to score.
