Breakers’ season ends in loss to Sea Kings

Laguna Beach High’s bid to secure an automatic berth into the

CIF-Southern Section playoffs was denied by rival Corona del Mar,

which scored a 35-8 Pacific Coast League victory at Guyer Field.

It was the final game of the regular season for both teams.

The win allowed the Sea Kings to wrap up sole possession of

third-place in the league standings and, along with it, the league’s

third and final automatic playoff berth.

Corona del Mar took a 7-0 first quarter lead and extended its

advantage to 21-0 at the half.

The Sea Kings scored the first two touchdowns of the season half

before Laguna crashed the scoreboard.

In the third quarter, Jesse Toscano scored on a seven-yard run.

Brad Wolf, playing on a broken leg, ran in the two-point

conversion.

Wolf, who also played on defense, led Laguna in the rushing

department with 55 yards.

In a season dominated by injuries, Laguna suffered another key

setback when starting quarterback Talan Torriero injured his leg in

the second quarter.

Freshman Tommy Cogburn and senior Bryan Brown took turns at

quarterback the remainder of the game.

Brown finished with 40 yards rushing and Cogburn completed two

passes.

Laguna ended its 2004 season, its first under head coach Jimmy

Nolan, with an overall record of 5-5.

The Breakers went 1-4 in Pacific Coast League play, their win

coming over host University on Oct. 29.
