The Laguna Art Museum turned into an art fun zone with activities

galore Saturday to celebrate art education and the opening of the

museum’s Learning Lab.

“It was really, really fun,” development director Ann Camp said.

“We geared this particular family day to a teen audience with the

fashion show, henna tattoos, photo booth and projects that age group

might enjoy.”

Camp said about 300 people attended the lab, which offered art

experiences throughout the museum.

“The event was to announce to the general public that the new

Learning Lab will be used this point forward for classes, workshops,

art camps and lectures,” Camp said. “It’s a very nice multi-purpose

education center for the museum.”

Camp said to energize the new Learning Lab space, they invited top

designers and artists from Hobie, Volcom, Quiksilver and other

premiere surf wear companies to paint murals.

“To have artists actually working during the event and seeing the

young artists at work, it inspires people,” Camp said.

In the same area, children and adults used drawing and painting

materials to create their own works.

Luz Malbran brought her 5-year-old daughter Olivia, who was busily

engrossed in her watercolors.

“I’ve lived in Laguna Beach about a month and we wanted to check

out the museum,” Malbran said. “We’re trying to get to know the city

and all that’s available, especially the art.”

The teen fashion show had the crowd cheering with the young models

proudly showing off popular threads.

Camp said Mark Christy co-owner of Hobie Sports, was a great help.

“He stepped in at the very last minute and did a fashion show that

was a big hit for the kids,” Camp said.

Alexis Deltoro, 9, came with some friends and was watching the

fashion show.

“I like the art in Laguna Beach, I think it’s really interesting

to see what people in my community do,” Alexis said. “I like being

able to come here, see all the art ... and you get to do a lot of fun

activities in the museum.”
