Sage falls

The Sage Hill School girls tennis team was defeated, 10-8, by

top-seeded Malibu in a CIF Southern Section Division V semifinal at

Pepperdine University Thursday.

Malibu (18-2) beat the Lightning by the same score in last

season’s semifinals en route to the Division V crown.

Salen Andrews and Carissa Cummings, as well as the tandem of Sarah

Flynn and Alle Hsu, swept in doubles for the Lightning (15-7).

Vanguard women win

* BASKETBALL: The Vanguard University women’s basketball team

earned a 71-68 victory over Freed-Hardeman Thursday in the Rotary

Classic at Union University in Jackson, Tenn.

Kelly Schmidt led VU (2-0, ranked No. 2 in the NAIA), with 19

points and 13 rebounds, while Lisa Faulkner added 17 points and

Melissa Cook had 18 points and nine boards.

Freed-Hardeman, ranked No. 6, fell to 7-1.

Titans surprise UCI

* VOLLEYBALL: Host Cal State Fullerton earned a 32-34, 30-27,

20-30, 30-25, 15-12 Big West Confernce women’s volleyball win over

UCI Thursday.

The Titans (14-12, 6-11 in conference) dropped UCI to 17-9, 10-7.
