Orange Coast rallies for 56-55 victory

Forward Dave Seifert scored nine of his team-high 11 points in the

second half as the Orange Coast College men’s basketball team rallied

to defeat host Cerritos, 56-55, in nonconference action Friday night.

Trailing at halftime, 34-28, the Pirates (2-0) shot 40.7 percent

from the floor in the second half (11 of 27) while Cerritos (1-3)

shot 28.6 percent (8 of 28) in the second 20 minutes.

Seifert also grabbed eight rebounds for the Pirates, who play in

the Citrus tournament Nov. 26-27.

Union tops Vanguard

* BASKETBALL: The host Union Bulldogs rallied in the second half

Friday to remain unbeaten as they defeated Vanguard, 64-56, in the

Jackson Rotary women’s basketball tournament at Jackson, Tenn.

Coach Russ Davis’ Lions (2-1) enjoyed a 31-27 halftime lead, but

Union (7-0) shot 48.4 percent (15 of 31) from the floor in the second

half.

Sophomore forward Kelly Schmidt paced Vanguard with 14 points and

seven rebounds, while VU senior point guard Lisa Faulkner added 13

points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Vanguard concludes play in the tournament at 7 p.m. tonight

against Freed-Hardeman, Tenn.

Lions remain perfect

* MEN’S BASKETBALL: The Vanguard University men’s basketball team

held on for a 76-73 nonleague victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps

Friday night at the Pit in Costa Mesa.

Kevin Dalafu scored a game-high 27 points with seven

three-pointers as the Lions (4-0) remained undefeated. He also

finished with a team-high six rebounds and six assists.

The visiting Stags (0-1) erased an 18-point first half deficit

with a 28-14 run, thanks to four players finishing with double-digit

points.

Vanguard plays tonight against Pomona-Pitzer.

Coast women dropped

* BASKETBALL: Sophomore standout Rhondi Naff scored 32 points for

the Orange Coast College women’s basketball team Friday night, but

Irvine Valley defeated the Pirates, 68-64, in the semifinals of the

Santa Barbara tournament.

The Pirates (2-3), also led by Lauren Stepanski’s 12 points, will

play either Santa Barbara or L.A. Valley at 4 p.m. today for third

place.

Stanford leads Cup

* SWIMMING AND DIVING: Stanford’s men’s and women’s teams

continued to lead the UC Irvine Speedo Cup at Belmont Plaza in Long

Beach after the second day.

The Stanford men have 1145 points heading into the final day,

ahead of second-place UC San Diego with 701 points. BYU is closely

behind with 693 points.

The Cardinal women have 1155.5 points after two days and lead the

Oregon State Beavers, who are in second place with 697 points.

The host Anteaters are in fifth place for both the men and the

women. The UCI men have 481 points while the UCI women have 411

points.

The UCI/Speedo Cup concludes today with finals beginning at 6 p.m.

at Belmont Plaza.

Pony signups slated

* BASEBALL: The Costa Mesa Pony League will hold signups for the

Spring 2005 season Saturday from 9 a.m. to Noon at Costa Mesa High in

front of the gym.

The Pony Division is for players ages 13 and 14. Fees are $145 per

player. The Costa Mesa League plays in a conference with Newport

Harbor and Corona del Mar Pony Leagues. For information call (714)

VU women eliminated

* VOLLEYBALL: The Vanguard University women’s volleyball team was

swept by host Fresno Pacific, 30-18, 30-13, 30-24, in the semifinals

of the NAIA Region II tournament.

Vanguard, which made its first postseason appearance in 10 years,

finishes 25-13.

Fresno Pacific improves to 32-1.

Jaclyn Lee led the Lions with 10 kills.
