Damion, Walters remain perfect

The Corona del Mar High doubles team of Jill Damion and Alexandra

Walters maintained their perfect record this season with two more

victories to open the CIF Southern Section individual regional girls

tennis tournament Saturday at the Jack Kramer Tennis Club in Rolling

Hills Estates.

Top-seeded Damion and Walters, the Pacific Coast League doubles

champions who have won all 10 sets they have played together,

advanced to the round of 16, scheduled Dec. 2 at SeaCliff Country

Club in Huntington Beach.

Damion and Walters, who had a bye in the first round, rolled to a

6-2, 6-0 victory over Kathryn McIntyre and Tiffany Huang from St.

Margaret’s in the second round.

They then tallied a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Long Beach Wilson’s

Madeline Segura and Katie Visico in round three.

Damion and Walters trailed, 0-2, in the first set, before winning

the next 10 games. The Sea King duo claimed 12 of the last 13 games.

OCC captures third

* BASKETBALL: Orange Coast College sophomore Rhondi Naff scored 22

points to propel the Pirates’ women’s basketball team to a 51-46 win

over host Santa Barbara in the third-place game of the Santa Barbara

tournament Saturday.

Naff earned all-tournament honors for the Pirates (3-3).

Vanguard women roll

* BASKETBALL: The Vanguard University women’s basketball team,

ranked No. 2 in the NAIA, rebounded from Friday’s loss to No.

4-ranked Union by trouncing Lambuth of Tennessee, 98-59, in the final

round-robin game of the Rotary Classic Saturday in Jackson, Tenn.

Senior All-American Lisa Faulkner led the winners (3-1) with 22

points, while sophomore Kelly Schmidt chipped in 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Sophomore Rachel Besse had 19 points and seven boards for the

Lions.

Lambuth fell to 3-3.

UCI falls in overtime

* WATER POLO: Former Newport Harbor High standout Ross Sinclair

was among three UC Santa Barbara men’s water polo players with two

goals in the Gauchos’ 8-7 sudden-death-overtime nonconference win

over visiting UC Irvine Saturday.

Rick Merlo led UCI (15-12) with three goals. UCSB improved to

18-11.

Crush sign Rooks

* BASKETBALL: Sean Rooks, who played for eight teams during a

12-year NBA career that ended last season, has been signed by the

Orange County Crush, a spokesman for the American Basketball

Association team said Saturday.

The 6-foot-10 Rooks is not scheduled to play in the Crush’s 2:05

season opener against the Long Beach Jam today at Long Beach State’s

Pyramid.

Rooks, who played collegiately at Arizona, averaged 6.8 points and

3.2 rebounds in his NBA career that included stops with the Lakers

and Clippers.

Sage duo wins twice

* TENNIS: The Sage Hill School doubles tandem of senior Sarah

Flynn and sophomore Alle Hsu won two matches, before being eliminated

Saturday in the CIF Southern Section individual regional girls tennis

tournament at Palisades Racquet Club in Rolling Hills Estates.

Flynn and Hsu, the Academy League doubles champions who finished

56-11 this season, defeated Samantha Banstein and Makensy Smith from

Archer, 6-3, 6-4, then topped Savana Yeh and Alex Khoury from Santa

Monica, 6-0, 6-4.

But the Lightning duo ran into the Peninsula twosome of Emily

Aston and Stephanie Chen, who defeated the locals, 6-0, 6-3.

No love for UC Irvine

* BASKETBALL: The UC Irvine women’s basketball team was defeated

by Love and Basketball, 65-55, in an exhibition game Saturday night

at the Bren Events Center.

Junior Lauren Yadon led the Anteaters with 19 points and added

nine rebounds. Senior Ashley Biggins had 10 rebounds and three

points, while freshman walk-on Katie Curtis had eight assists for

UCI, which opens its regular season Tuesday at home against San Jose

State.

Kristee Davidson, a UCI freshman projected to start, had knee

surgery Thursday and is out indefinitely.

Love and Basketball, guided by former UCI Coach Colleen Matsuhara,

received 23 points from Bryn Britton.

Lions take first loss

* BASKETBALL: The Vanguard University men’s basketball team

suffered its first loss in five games this season, falling to

nonconference visitor Pomona-Pitzer, 74-63, Saturday.

Kevin Dalafu and Garrett Strocsher scored 15 apiece for the Lions

(4-1), while Brian Kim added 14.

Pomona-Pitzer (1-0) had six scorers in double figures.

OCC men ousted

* SOCCER: The Orange Coast College men’s soccer team was defeated,

1-0, by host Cerritos in the second round of the Southern California

regional playoffs Saturday.

Eduardo Padilla scored in the 74th minute to help the Falcons

(14-4-3) advance.

OCC’s Jose Serpas was stonewalled at point-blank range in the 37th

minute by Cerritos goalie Robert Carrillo. Serpas finished the season

with 20 goals. OCC ends 11-5-5.

UCI ties for fourth

* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine women’s volleyball team closed out its

Big West Conference season with a 25-30, 30-21, 27-30, 30-22, 15-13

road victory over UC Riverside Friday night.

The win helped the Anteaters (18-8, 11-7 in conference) earn a

fourth-place tie in the Big West standings with Cal State Northridge.

Northridge defeated visiting Utah State in four games Saturday to

finish 11-7 in conference. UCI split with Northridge this season.

At least four teams from the Big West have advanced to the NCAA

tournament the previous six seasons, including six teams in 2003.

Against Riverside, UCI senior outside hitter Kelly Wing had 24

kills, giving her 2,246 for her career. She passed Jennifer Joines

(University of the Pacific) to move into the No. 2 spot on the Big

West career kills list. Former Long Beach State star Tara Cross is

No. 1 with 2,767 from 1986-89.

UCI senior setter Ashlie Hain had 63 assists Friday, enabling her

to move into the No. 2 spot on the conference career list. Her 5,641

assists are surpassed only by Sheri Sanders (Long Beach State from

1986-89), who had 6,301.

UCI completes its regular season Friday against Notre Dame in the

Baden Thanksgiving Classic at Long Beach State.

OCC’s Padilla honored

* FOOTBALL: Orange Coast College freshman tailback Matt Padilla

has been named Orange Empire Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

The 5-foot-11, 210-pounder carried 29 times for 155 yards and four

touchdowns in the Pirates’ 33-32 victory over Golden West Nov. 13.

Naff to Bakersfield

* BASKETBALL: Orange Coast College sophomore women’s basketball

standout Rhondi Naff has committed to continue her career at Cal

State Bakersfield, Pirates Coach Mike Thornton announced.

Naff, a 6-foot forward out of Costa Mesa High, averaged 10.4

points and 4.6 rebounds last season. This season, she averaged 19.7

points through three games for the Pirates.

Cal State Bakersfield was 23-6 last season and advanced to the

second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs.
