Cypress eliminates Pirates

The Orange Coast College women’s soccer team’s season was cut short

by an old nemesis Saturday in a Southern California regional

semifinal.

Top-seeded and host Cypress, with a defense that limited Coast,

making its first playoff appearance since 2002, to one shot, scored

two second-half goals and reached their 10th straight regional final

with a 2-0 victory.

Freshman Kara DeMille, who played at Newport Harbor High, tallied

a game-high seven saves for the Pirates (13-5-3), who fell to the

Chargers (19-1-1) for the third time this season.

Cathi Dragna headed in a corner kick by Beth Wagenhoffer in the

49th minute. Wagenhoffer scored the game’s final goal in the 84th

minute.

The Pirates reached the regional final two years ago, but lost,

3-1, in overtime to Cypress.
