Schmidt explodes for school record

Sophomore Kelly Schmidt scored a school-record 41 points as Vanguard

University defeated La Sierra University, 124-42, Tuesday night at

the Pit in a nonconference women’s basketball game.

Schmidt was one of five Lion players to score in double figures.

She also chimed in with a game-high 10 rebounds.

Vanguard (4-1) matched its offensive output with defensive

intensity, holding La Sierra to 14 of 55 (25.5%) from the field.

The Lions will next play Nov. 30 when they open the conference

schedule by hosting Christian Heritage.

Orange Coast advances

* VOLLEYBALL: The Orange Coast College women’s volleyball team

beat San Bernardino Valley, 30-28, 30-23, 30-18, in the first round

of the Southern California regional playoffs at OCC.

OCC (16-5) was led by sophomore outside hitter Donka Drozd, who

had three blocks and a match-high 17 kills. The Pirates, the No. 8

seed, also received 12 kills from sophomore outside hitter Chontel

Palomino and 16 kills from all-state middle blocker Melissa Zapiain.

San Bernardino Valley’s Christine Hurt had 11 kills while Sara

Medina had 27 assists for the Wolverines (13-2).

OCC will host No. 16-seeded Cypress Saturday at 7 p.m.

Broncos too tough

* BASKETBALL: The Vanguard University men’s basketball team could

not erase a seven-point halftime deficit en route to an 85-61

nonconference loss at Cal Poly Pomona Tuesday.

Cal Poly Pomona, which converted 23 of 28 foul shots (82.1%) and

eight of 19 (55.1%) from three-point range, scored the first 10

points of the second half to break open the game.

Vanguard (4-2) was led by Leon Rosborough and Levi Seekins, who 11

points each.

The Broncos (1-0) were paced by Jeff Bonds’ 20 points and David

Sybesma’s 18 points.

CdM’s Hewko selected

* WATER POLO: Former Corona del Mar High standout Christina Hewko

was among 13 players selected to the 2005 FINA Junior Women’s World

Championship team by Coach Kyle Utsumi, announced Monday.

The Junior World Championships will be held Jan 24-30, 2005, in

Perth, Australia.

Hewko, a member of the United States junior national team and the

CIF Southern Section Division II Player of the Year in 2003, tallied

15 goals as a Stanford freshman last season, when the Cardinal

reached the NCAA semifinals.

Thirteen of the world championship team’s 15 players, which

include two alternates, hail from California. Six will make their

second stints on the squad.
