Lab to host charity event for children

The third annual “Orange County Design Collective” exhibition will

be held from 8 to 11 p.m. Friday at the Lab, 2930 Bristol St., Costa

Mesa.

The event will benefit the America Works for Kids charity through

a silent auction.

America Works for Kids is a nonprofit organization dedicated to

preparing foster children ages 12 to 17 to become independent

contributors to the community.

Participants confirmed to date are: The Amerikan Project,

Billabong, Cardboard Robot, Element, Ezekiel, Fox, Fresh Jive,

Hurley, Lost, LOW, LRG, Mada, Op, Quiksilver, Reef, Roxy, Rusty,

Sanuk, Split, Status Foe, Stussy, Tankfarm and Trovata.

The pre-paid admission is $25. The admission fee includes three

drinks, food and a T-shirt. Payment for the event must be made by

today.

Checks are to be made payable to the Lab.

The admission fee is a nonprofit donation and is tax deductible.

Free valet parking will be offered at the Lab, but carpooling is

recommended.

Group taking donations for troops overseas

The safeguard group is preparing holiday care packages for the 4th

Cavalry Squadron stationed in Iraq. The group is asking for donations

of DVDs, books, batteries, PlayStations, sunglasses, magazines and

basic supplies such as soap, toothpaste and food. Personal letters of

encouragement and support are also welcomed.

Donations are welcomed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through

Friday at the group’s office, 3554 Business Park Drive in Costa Mesa,

near Harbor Boulevard.

City seeking donations for spring cleanup

The city of Costa Mesa is seeking donations of money, supplies,

materials, food and drinks for its Neighbors for Neighbors spring

2005 community cleanup event.

The event will be on April 23. It will bring together residents

and community leaders in an effort to improve low-income homes. The

Canyon Park cleanup will be part of this event.

The event will include removing graffiti, cleaning up debris and

general neighborhood beautification. Nearly 800 volunteers are

expected to attend the event, which starts at 8 a.m. and ends at

noon.

All donations should be sent to the attention of Jacqueline

Reeves, Housing and Community Development, City of Costa Mesa, PO Box

1200, Costa Mesa, CA, 92628-1200.

All monetary donations should be made out to the Costa Mesa

Community Foundation with a memo notation “Neighbors for Neighbors.”

All funds will be used for the cost of materials and supplies for

the event. Donor contributions will be recognized in advertisements.

In order to receive endorsements on the Neighbors for Neighbors

T-shirts, donations must be received in the Housing and Community

Development department by March 4.

Parent Help USA to

aid Toys for Tots

Parent Help USA, a child-abuse-prevention center in Costa Mesa, is

accepting donations for its holiday gala benefit and memberships for

its 2004 membership drive.

The group offers free counseling, weekly peaceful-parenting

classes and motel family outreach services, and it participates in

the Toys for Tots program.

With the holiday season approaching, the group needs blankets,

toys and clothing.
