Trojans topple UCI

The UC Irvine men’s water polo team fell to USC, 7-4, in the

third-place game of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament

Sunday at Stanford University.

The No. 3-seeded Trojans built a 5-2 halftime lead, then netted

the only two goals of the third period to end the Anteaters’ season.

UCI (16-14) was the No. 5 seed. Coach Ted Newland’s squad also

entered the tournament ranked fifth in the NCAA.

Dan Noon and Dreason Barry scored first-half goals for UCI, which

also received single tallies from Rick Merlo and Colin Mello.

Junior goalie Joe Wynne had eight saves for the Anteaters.

Juan Delgadillo scored three goals to lead the Trojans (22-5).

UCI women sign three

* BASKETBALL: The UC Irvine women’s basketball program announced

three players have signed national letters of intent to play for the

Anteaters, beginning next season.

Lindsay Allen, a 6-foot-1 senior forward at Orange Lutheran High,

was an All-CIF Southern Section performer last season, when she

averaged 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Lancers.

Kelly Cochran, a 5-11 forward, was All-CIF as a junior at

Chaminade High in West Hills. She averaged 14.7 points and 4.6

rebounds last season.

Kirian Ishizaki, a 5-7 guard, averaged 12 points and 5.5 assists

as a junior last season at Presentation High in San Jose. She is a

three-time All-West Catholic Athletic League selection.

These three will join an Anteater roster comprised this season of

six freshmen and three sophomores.

Former Sailor shines

* VOLLEYBALL: Newport Harbor High product Taylor Govaars, a senior

women’s volleyball standout at the University of Deleware, completed

her career when the Blue Hens were defeated by Towson in the

championship match of the Colonial Athletic Association conference

tournament.

Govaars, a 5-foot-10 libero, was named to the all-tournament team

and also was named second-team all-conference by coaches.

Govaars had 636 digs this season, which ranks third in school

single-season annals. Her 5.39 digs per game were a school

single-season record.

Her 1,631 career digs rank No. 3 at Deleware.
