Huntington Pop Warner team going to Disney World
For the second consecutive year, Huntington Beach Pop Warner Football
will be represented at the national championship tournament at the
Walt Disney World Resort Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando,
Fla.
The Jr. Pee Wee Green Chargers earned a berth in the national
event by defeating the Yuma Scorpions, 20-19, in the Southwest region
championship game.
The Chargers will open their national title bid Tuesday against
New England region champion, the Rhode Island Chiefs.
In the Southwest final, Huntington Beach trailed early, 6-0,
before Chris Dubois and Chris Ogilvie, teamed on a 25-yard touchdown
pass play. The extra point gave the Green Chargers a 7-6 lead.
Christian Miller later scored on a 50-yard burst up the middle and
the point after gave Huntington a 14-6 halftime cushion. But the
Arizona-based Scorpions came on strong in the second half, getting
touchdowns on a 30-yard pass play and a 20-yard run to forge a 19-14
lead.
With less than six minutes in the game, the Chargers offense got
the ball back. A score on a counter play was nullified by penalty,
but Josh Peth made up for that miscue with a slashing cutback across
the goal line for the go-ahead score and a 20-19 lead.
Yuma, though, used a 60-yard pass-run play to get to the
Huntington 10-yard line with just over a minute to play in
regulation, but the Green Chargers defense, as it has done all
season, tightened. A run and three pass attempts could not reach the
end zone and Huntington got the ball back on downs and ran out the
game clock.
“That was by far one of the most exciting games I have every
coached,” Huntington Coach Mac Dubois said. “The Scorpions were a
well-prepared team, but our kids continue to find ways to win.”
Huntington had secured a spot in the division championship by
shutting out the Palomar Conference champion Vista Bolts, 26-0, at
Torrey Pines High School in Carmel Valley.
Peth rushed for a pair of touchdowns, Cole Fraser ran for another
score and Brenton Visnoski’s 25-yard interception return set up
Brandon Trulli’s 25-yard touchdown run.
Trulli also had two fumble recoveries and an interception. Eric
Vogelsang caused a fumble and recorded a sack.
The shutout marked the ninth consecutive game that the Green
Chargers defense had not given up a touchdown.
Now, it’s on to Disneyworld.
“We’re excited about representing our community in Orlando,”
Dubois said, adding that the Jr. Pee Wee Green Charger’s are in need
of some financial assistance to ensure all the boys are able to make
the trip.
