Man arrested for alleged assault

Costa Mesa Police arrested a 24-year-old man Wednesday on

suspicion of assault to commit rape against a housekeeper at a local

motel.

The alleged assault happened when the woman, a 36-year-old Costa

Mesa resident, was cleaning a room at the Inn at Costa Mesa at 3151

Harbor Blvd. just after 4 p.m. Wednesday, Costa Mesa Police Sgt.

Marty Carver said.

“A male enters, locks the door and grabs her,” Carver said. “She

screams, he gets scared and runs.”

The man, 24-year-old Derian Dion Hines, had attempted to cover his

face with a black cloth, Carver said. After he fled, police found him

nearby and arrested him. The woman was not injured.

Hines is from Mississippi and had been staying at the motel for a

few weeks, Carver said.

He was arrested Nov. 7 by Garden Grove Police on suspicion of

driving with a suspended license and outstanding traffic warrants in

San Bernardino County, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s

Department website. He was released the next day.

Hines is now being held at the Costa Mesa jail on $100,000 bail.

Armed robbers hit Costa Mesa liquor store

Two men armed with handguns robbed a Costa Mesa liquor store

Wednesday night, police said.

The two men entered Mesa Verde Liquor in the 1500 block of W.

Baker Street, pointed their guns at the clerk and demanded money,

Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Marty Carver said. The clerk gave them an

undisclosed amount of money from the register, but they demanded

more, he said.

The men bound the clerk’s hands and feet with tape and ransacked

the store, looking for more money, Carver said. They ran out a back

door when a customer came in, he said.

Police have no one in custody in the case.
