Icebergs win title
The AYSO Region 57 girls under-12 Icebergs defeated the Blazers, 4-0,
in the championship game Sunday.
Ellie Nadal, Catherine Sullivan, Jessica Beyer and Katelyn Baker
were the four goal-scorers for the Icebergs in Sunday’s game. Nica
Sabouni and Alexis Meruelo were the goalkeepers who aided in the
shutout. Ava Soleimany also played a solid defensive game.
The Icebergs are led by Nadal, Sullivan, Beyer, Baker, Sabouni,
Meruelo, Soleimany, Taylor Lipman, Michele Brescia, Christina Page,
Anna Scott, Madison Fradella and Brooke Braga.
The Blazers, who advanced to the final in a 2-1 triple-overtime
game the day before, are led by McKenna Gaskill, Alex Stimpson,
Amanda Wilson, Alannah Connealy, Sann Taskinen, Audrey Doud, Bridget
Murphy, Taya Windle, Shelby Bracho, Sara Silverman, Amanda Wilson,
Britton Taylor, Em Tomei, Sarah Portner, A-Lo Lozowski and Hayley
Mattoon.
Region 97 girls celebrate
* SOCCER: The AYSO Region 97 girls under-11 soccer team defeated
Huntington Beach, 3-2, to complete a 12-1-2 season that qualified the
team as the champions of the league.
Nicole Dinatale and Savanna Gastineau both scored in the first
half to give Newport a 2-0 lead at halftime. But Huntington came back
with two goals in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Newport’s Madison Wooters received a pass
near the far post and drilled it into the back of the net for the
win.
Blue Thunder ends big
* SOCCER: The AYSO Region 120 girls under-10 Blue Thunder went
through the season undefeated, with 13 wins and two ties on their way
to winning the championship game.
The team racked up 35 goals during the entire season, while only
allowing eight, including eight shutouts. The Blue Thunder are led by
Marlene Calderon, Brianna Check, Grace Clever, Cynthia Eggers, Gianna
Jason, Carly Mariani, Caitlin Roche, Alyssa Rodriguez, Joanna
Saavedra, Cristina Tuer, Taylor Tuxford and Mia Crysel.
Pony signups Saturday
* BASEBALL: The Costa Mesa Pony League will hold signups for the
Spring 2005 season Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Costa Mesa High in
front of the main gym.
The Pony division is for players 13 and 14. Fees are $145 per
player. The Costa Mesa League plays in a conference with Newport
Harbor and Corona del Mar Pony Leagues. For more information call

Munchkin Holiday Camp
* TENNIS: The Munchkin Tennis Holiday Camp provides an
introductory to the game of tennis for children ages 4 to 7 that
allows parents time to finish holiday shopping while the kids are
keeping active. The camp, which runs from Dec. 20-24, is based on
movements and games intended to teach the basics of the sport in a
fun-filled environment. The fee is $125. For more information call

Baseball camp offered
* BASEBALL: Newport Harbor High baseball coach Joel Desguin and
Orange Coast College head man John Altobelli are presenting the 2004
Winter Baseball Camp at Mariners Park in Newport Beach.
The camp, for players ages 5-14, runs Dec. 20 trough 24 from 9
a.m. to noon.
Campers will receive instruction in throwing, catching and
hitting, as well as strategies of the game.
Snacks will be provided, but campers are asked to bring their own
ample supply of water.
The fees are $125 for Newport Harbor Baseball Association members
and $140 for nonmembers. Campers will receiv T-shirts and prizes.
