* BASKETBALL: The Sage Hill School boys basketball team defeated

Lutheran of San Diego, 58-16, to begin play in the La Jolla Country

Day tournament Wednesday at La Jolla Country Day High.

Senior Matt Loper had a game-high 21 points for the Lightning

(3-0), while senior Jordan Ogren added 13.

Sage faces Coronado today at 4:30 in the same tournament.

Edison handles CdM

* BASKETBALL: The Corona del Mar High boys basketball team lost to

Edison, 53-32, in the a La Quinta tournament quarterfinal Wednesday

night.

Edison (3-0) went on a 10-2 run in the fourth quarter, and the Sea

Kings (2-2) could only muster six-total points in the period. Senior

Tyler Lance led CdM with six points.

Corona del Mar faces University Friday at 5 p.m. in a fifth-place

semifinal.

Mustangs topped

* BASKETBALL: The Costa Mesa High girls basketball team lost to

Riverside Poly, 44-31, in the Fountain Valley tournament Wednesday at

Fountain Valley High.

The Mustangs (2-2) tied the game at 11 points going into the

second quarter, but only scored five points in the second and third

periods combined. Junior Tracy Bjelland had 13 points and nine

rebounds, while junior Judie Akansel added seven points.

Mesa plays Los Alamitos at 6 p.m. Friday in the same tournament.

Lancers limit Lightning

* SOCCER: Richard Gadbois scored twice, but it was not enough as

the Sage Hill School boys soccer team fell to visiting Orange

Lutheran, 7-2, in a nonleague game Wednesday.

Gadbois scored the game’s final goal on a penalty kick in the 72nd

minute. Zack Shockley and Jimmy O’Hare made six and four saves,

respectively, for the Lightning (0-3).

Orange Lutheran improved to 4-0.

Sage trims Grove

* BASKETBALL: The Sage Hill School girls basketball team defeated

visiting Garden Grove, 49-40, in a nonleague game Tuesday night.

The Lightning (2-0) were down by six points at halftime, but after

going to a full-court press in the second half, Sage went into the

fourth quarter up, 34-32. The Lightning held on from there to win

their second in a row.

Senior Katie Puishys had 20 points, while junior Haywood Wright

had 12 points for the Lightning, who host Calvary Chapel Dec. 15 at 6

p.m.

Grove drops Mesa

* BASKETBALL: The Costa Mesa High boys basketball team opened its

season with a 42-39 loss to Pleasant Grove in pool play of the Bill

Reynolds Classic at Newport Harbor High Wednesday.

The Mustangs came up just short in the final moments, missing a

three-pointer to tie the game. Senior Jeff Waldron scored 13 points

to lead Mesa, while junior guard Brian Molina added 10.

The Mustangs continue pool play when they face Northwood at 3:30

p.m. today in the same tournament.
