Sage Hill suffers first loss
Senior Matt Loper tallied a team-high 13 points while freshman Jamie
McGee added 11 points off the bench, but the Sage Hill School boys
basketball team suffered its first loss, a 46-36 setback to Coronado,
in the second round of the La Jolla Country Day tournament Thursday.
Sage Hill (3-1) held a 19-18 lead at halftime, but Coronado (3-0)
outscored the Lightning, 28-17, in the final two periods.
The Lightning climbed within 30-26 in the third quarter, but got
no closer the rest of the way. Mike Voge scored six points while Tim
Lefter and Michael Morgan each added two for Sage, which competes in
a consolation-round game at 4:30 p.m. today at Santa Fe High.
Sage suffered a blow when starting freshman point guard Nick Witte
went down with a shoulder injury in the first half, assistant coach
Greg Haskell said.

Kent signs with L.A.
* BASEBALL: Jeff Kent, an all-star second baseman who played for
the Houston Astros last season, agreed to a two-year contract with
the Los Angeles Dodgers Thursday at the Blue Water Grill’s Costa Mesa
restaurant.
His father, Al, is retired from the Costa Mesa Police Department.
Mustangs go down
* BASKETBALL: The Costa Mesa High boys basketball team lost to
Northwood, 62-47, in both teams’ second day of pool play in the Bill
Reynolds Classic Thursday at Newport Harbor High.
The Timberwolves (2-2) capitalized on 20 Mesa turnovers throughout
the game and more than doubled the Mustangs’ fourth-quarter points.
Mesa (0-2) plays Newport Harbor today at 6:30 p.m. in the same
tournament.

Grove takes Harbor
* BASKETBALL: The Newport Harbor High boys basketball team lost to
Pleasant Grove, 51-46, in both teams’ second day of pool play in the
Bill Reynolds Classic Thursday at Newport Harbor.
Senior Brett Perrine led the Sailors (0-3) with 15 points, while junior Tony Yahigan had 14. Newport plays Costa Mesa today at 6:30

Dolphins edge Sailors
* SURFING: The host Newport Harbor High surf team took visiting
Dana Hills to the limit, but fell to 1-4 with an 85-83 South Coast
League loss at 56th Street on Thursday.
The meet wasn’t decided until the final heat, which went to a
fifth-wave tiebreaker.
Newport scored three victories -- the boys short board and body
board teams along with the girls short board squad.
The boys short board squad improved to 3-2 on the season with a
45-39 victory. Brian Doheny scored the best wave (7) of the contest.
Daniel Shea, Joey Head and Steve Farmer each placed first in their
heats for the third time this season while Doheny, J.J. Frei and
Brett Catron each finished second in their respective heats. Regan
Riley took third in the third heat.
Sailors’ Lisa Turk and Devon Falasco finished first and third,
respectively, in the girls short board division while the body board
team won, 12-9. Matt Kretschmar, who averaged 4.9, and Harry Tully
placed first and second, respectively, helping the squad improve to
2-2.
Both boys and girls long board teams lost to fall to 1-4 this
season. Tanner Prairie and Turk each placed third in their respective
divisions.
The Sailors host Los Alamitos Tuesday at 56th Street in Newport
Beach.
Sea Kings stumble
* SOCCER: The Corona del Mar High girls soccer team fell to
Mission Viejo, 4-0, in the first round of the Mater Dei tournament
Thursday at Mater Dei.
The Sea Kings (1-3) gave up three goals in the first half as they
adjusted to the artificial turf field, and gave up only one goal in
the second half.
CdM faces Arcadia, ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division
II, today at 5 p.m. in the same tournament.
CdM gets bounced
* BASKETBALL: The Corona del Mar High girls basketball team was
pummeled by Muir, 78-31, in each team’s third game of pool play in
the Duarte tournament Thursday at Duarte High.
Muir’s (4-0) Tierra Henderson racked up a game-high 34 points and
the Mustangs used a 26-2 first quarter run to jump out to an early
lead that the Sea Kings (1-5) couldn’t recover from.
Junior Katie Schulte had a team-high 14 points for CdM, while
junior Andrea Wayte had six. CdM plays in the third-place game of the
tournament Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
