Kim ignites Sage

The Sage Hill School girls soccer team defeated host Laguna Beach,

3-0, for its seventh consecutive win to open the season.

Freshman Kellee Kim tallied two goals for the Lightning (7-0), one

in the first half off an assist from senior Amy Werblin and another

in the second half off an assist from freshman Claire Josephson.

Josephson scored the final goal against Laguna Beach (0-6).

Loper leads Lightning

* BASKETBALL: The Sage Hill School boys basketball defeated San

Ysidro, 53-40, in the quarterfinals of the La Jolla Country Day

tournament Friday at Santa Fe Christian High in Solana Beach.

Senior Matt Loper had a game-high 20 points for the Lightning

(4-1) and freshman Jamie McGee added 16, including three three-point

shots. San Ysidro fell to 1-2.

The Lightning play today at 11:20 a.m. against Calapatria in the

semifinals at La Jolla Country Day High.

Newport hangs on

* BASKETBALL: The Newport Harbor High girls basketball team

defeated Torrance, 39-36, in the consolation bracket of the

University tournament Friday at University High.

Senior guard Maaike Trobman hit two crucial free throws in the

final seconds to clinch the game for the Sailors (3-1). She finished with three points.

Sophomore Jessica Bodkin had 10 points for the Sailors, while

senior captain Vanessa Miller added nine. Sophomore Ivy Melo had one

three-point shot to accompany her seven points.

Newport plays in the consolation championship game today at 11:30

a.m. at University High.

Downey sinks Mesa

* WATER POLO: The Costa Mesa High girls water polo team lost to

visiting Downey, 6-1, in a nonleague game Friday.

Patricia Shuppert scored Mesa’s lone goal in the second period

during a six-on-five opportunity. Kelly Gentling had five saves for

the Mustangs (5-3).

Mesa falls to Poly

* SOCCER: The Costa Mesa High girls soccer team lost to Riverside

Poly, 2-1, in the Ocean View tournament Friday at Ocean View High.

Senior captain Nilani Duarte scored Mesa’s lone goal midway

through the second half.

If Mayfair defeats Glendora by three goals or more today, then

Mesa (4-2) will play Mayfair in the third-place game of the

tournament today at 2:30 p.m.

CdM loses to No. 1

* SOCCER: The Corona del Mar High girls soccer team lost to

Arcadia, ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division II, 2-0, in

each teams’ second game of the Mater Dei tournament Friday at Mater

Dei.

Arcadia scored right off the bat in the third minute, and again in

the 41st minute.

The Sea Kings (1-4) play Martin Luther King Jr. of Riverside,

ranked No. 1 in Division IV, today at 2:15 p.m. in the same

tournament.

Mustangs bested

* BASKETBALL: The Costa Mesa High girls basketball team lost to

Los Alamitos, 57-35, in the third round of pool play at the Fountain

Valley tournament Friday at Fountain Valley High.

Junior Deanna Sanchez led the Mustangs (2-3) with 11 points,

including two three-point shots, while junior Judie Akansel had seven

points against Los Alamitos (4-2).

Mesa plays Santa Ana Valley in the seventh-place game of the

tournament today at 3 p.m.

* BASKETBALL: The Corona del Mar High boys basketball team lost to

University, 80-48, in a consolation game of the La Quinta tournament

Friday at La Quinta High.

University (3-1) outscored CdM, 28-5, in the third quarter, and

the Sea Kings (2-3) couldn’t recover in the fourth.

CdM plays Huntington Beach today at 2 p.m. in the same tournament.

Breakers top Lightning

* SOCCER: Sage Hill School sophomore Braden Ross broke a scoreless

tie in the 13th minute, but visiting Laguna Beach scored two

second-half goals within a 90-second span to claim a 2-1 nonleague

boys soccer win Friday.

Sam Luna and Brenden Hexberg scored for the Breakers in the 52nd

and 53rd minutes, respectively.

Sage Hill fell to 0-4.
