“I’ll be watching this pretty closely. It keeps getting pronounced

dead but not getting buried.”

-- Steve Bromberg, Newport Beach City Councilman, on a proposal

from the city of Fullerton to operate a commercial airport at the

closed El Toro Marine Corps Air Station.

“All she would talk about was looking forward to that wedding. I

was shocked [to hear of her death]. She’s a newlywed and -- boom --

she’s gone.”

-- John Papillon, a Costa Mesa resident who knew 35-year-old Uyen

Tran and her new husband, 37-year-old Aaron Miles. Police found the

couple dead in their West Newport apartment Wednesday afternoon.

Police believe Miles shot his wife, then turned the handgun on

himself.

“My biggest concern is their well-being. For them to just

disappear like this is not likely to happen at all. I’ve been through

various scenarios in my head, and I try to picture a good outcome.”

-- Ryan Hawks, the 28-year-old son of Thomas Hawks. Thomas Hawks

is missing along with his wife, Jackie Hawks.

“He asked me, ‘Are you OK?’ every now and then. I was like,

‘Yeah.’ And I had this huge smile on my face. He was so nice. I felt

like I was dancing with my brother. It was amazing.”

-- Denise Heinrichs, a Costa Mesa resident who danced with

“American Idol” runner-up Clay Aiken during his show at the Orange

County Performing Arts Center.

“In the beginning, the students were a little hesitant to call up

complete strangers and talk to them. But when they did it, they ended

up learning so much and having a great experience -- just like I

did.”

-- Keree James, an English teacher at Corona del Mar High,

describing students’ initial reluctance to research a project on the

attack on Pearl Harbor.
