Loper pours in 32

Senior Matt Loper had both game- and career-highs with 32 points to

lead the Sage Hill School boys basketball team to a 55-47 victory

over Mes Ropian of Montebello in the Tarbut V’Torah tournament

Tuesday at Tarbut V’Torah in Irvine.

Senior Jordan Ogron and freshman Jamie McGee each had eight points

for the Lightning (7-1) in each teams’ second game of pool play in

the tournament.

The Lightning play the tournament host today at 4:45 p.m. at the

same location.

defeated visiting Long Beach Wilson, 12-8, in a nonleague game

Tuesday.

Junior Camille Hewko scored three goals to lead the Sea Kings

(2-0), while Jordan Anae, Ashley Chandler and Katie Indvik each had

two.

Newport trumps Uni

* SOCCER: The Newport Harbor High girls soccer team racked up six

goals and defeated host University, 6-3, in a nonleague game Tuesday.

Julia Bernay, Krystal Wright, Reese Simmons and Amy Klippert each

had a goal, while Kiley Hall hammered in two for the Sailors (3-1).

Mesa tames Lions

* SOCCER: Sophomore Cyndi Mendoza and senior Jenny Sparks each

tallied a goal in the first half to lead the Costa Mesa High girls

soccer team to a 2-0 win over host Westminster in each teams’ Golden

West League opener Tuesday.

Mendoza scored on a penalty kick and Sparks’ shot bounced off a

Westminster defender and into the goal for Mesa (6-2, 1-0 in league).

Sage Hill is streaking

* SOCCER: Freshman midfielder Kellee Kim scored two goals in the

first half to lead the Sage Hill School girls soccer team to a 4-0

victory over visiting Mary Star of the Sea in a nonleague game

Tuesday.

Emily Webb and Amy Werblin tallied the other two goals for the

Lightning (8-0), while Kara Percival, Ali McLaughlin, Carolyn Witte

and Lauren Neale each had an assist.

Warriors spear CdM

* BASKETBALL: The Corona del Mar High boys basketball team lost to

Woodbridge, 70-46, in both teams’ first game of pool play in the

Irvine World News Classic Tuesday at Woodbridge High.

The Sea Kings (3-4) face Edison for the third time this season

today at 6 p.m. in the same tournament.

Dorado tournament Tuesday at El Dorado High.

Junior Judie Akansel led the Mustangs (2-6) with 11 points, while senior Bethany Vergara had seven.

Sea Kings stymied

* BASKETBALL: The Corona del Mar High girls basketball team lost

to Magnolia, 66-35, in both teams’ first game of pool play in the

Buena Park tournament Tuesday at Buena Park High.

CdM (2-6) plays the tournament host today at 6 p.m. at Buena Park.

Mesa stumbles early

* BASKETBALL: The Costa Mesa High boys basketball team got off to

a slow start -- scoring three points in the first quarter -- and fell

to top-seeded El Toro, 61-38, in both teams’ first game of pool play

in the Anaheim Convention Center tournament Tuesday.

Scott Knox led Mesa (1-4) with 16 points.
