‘Eater baseball inks 11 for 2006 season

The UC Irvine baseball team has signed 11 student-athletes to

national letters of intent, as announced by Anteater assistant coach

and recruiting coordinator Sergio Brown.

The 2006 recruiting class consists of six right-handers, led by

Kyle Necke, a two-time All-San Antonio League selection out of

Walnut, Calif.

Also highlighting the group are infielders Joel Weeks, Michael

Gilmartin and Ben Orloff. Weeks was named to the All-South Coast

Conference second team while Gilmartin, a switch-hitter, is an

All-CIF first-team choice from Crespi High.

Orloff led Simi Valley to the CIF Southern Section Division II

championship and is a two-time scholar-athlete.

Sailors finish strong in Alaska

* BASKETBALL: The Newport Harbor High boys basketball team

outscored Mt. Edgecumbe, 30-18, in the second half and opened the

Service tournament with a 64-49 victory at Service High in Anchorage,

Ala., Thursday.

Senior Taylor Young led the Sailors (2-4) with 16 points -- 11 in

the first half -- and 10 rebounds in his season debut while Brett

Perrine tallied 14 points. Dennis Heenan scored 11 off the bench for

Newport, which faces either Lathrop or Service in the semifinals at

6:45 tonight.

Mustangs stump Saints

* SOCCER: Junior Jasmin Day scored twice while Nilani Duarte and

Sharon Frazier each added one goal to help the Costa Mesa girls

soccer team post its second straight Golden West League shutout, this

time a 4-0 triumph over visiting Santa Ana Thursday.

Cyndi Mendoza, who made one save playing in goal in the second

half, tallied two assists while Jenny Sparks and Duarte each had one

for Mesa (7-2, 2-0 in league).

Balance boosts Mustangs

* BASKETBALL: Scott Knox sank a game-high 16 points while three

teammates each added six points to power the Costa Mesa High boys

basketball team to a 55-39 victory over Loara in a consolation

bracket quarterfinal of the Anaheim Convention Center tournament

Thursday at Kennedy High.

Brandon Aleson, Larry Puente and William Lefebvre each scored six

points for Mesa (2-4), which faces either Kennedy or Trabuco Hills in

a consolation semifinal at 6 tonight at Kennedy High.

Sea Kings win impressively

* BASKETBALL: Every player scored for the Corona del Mar High

girls basketball team, which finished second in its pool after a

77-11 victory over Connelly in the Buena Park tournament Thursday at

Buena Park High.

The Sea Kings (4-6) face either La Habra or Westminster for third

place at 6 tonight.

Starter Katie Schulte and Shannon Johnson, who came off the bench,

each finished with a game-high 14 points while teammates Kristina

Wayte and Allie Duernberger chipped in seven apiece for CdM.

Vanguard holds off Toros

* BASKETBALL: Brian Kim scored a game-high 23 points while Leon

Rosborough tallied 17 to lead the host Vanguard University men’s

basketball team to a 78-72 nonconference victory over visiting Cal

State Dominguez Hills Thursday.

Tim Burnette chipped in 12 points and six rebounds while Kevin

Dalafu added 10 points and three assists for the Lions (6-4).

Bowman bolsters Costa Mesa

* WATER POLO: Sarah Bowman scored three of her four goals in the

first period and the Costa Mesa High girls water polo team’s defense

did the rest in a 4-1 nonleague victory over visiting Garden Grove

Thursday.

Chandra Malapira added one goal while Kelly Gentling made six

saves for the Mustangs (7-3).

Shea repeats in Sailors’ sweep

* SURFING: The Newport Harbor High surf team defeated Laguna

Beach, 83-61, Thursday.

Newport’s Lisa Turk and Devon Falasco finished first and second,

respectively, in both the girls short board and long board

competitions. Mahea Hookano was third in the long board and Taylor

Simpkins was third in the short board to complete the Sailor sweeps.

Newport’s Tanner Prairie and Chase Smith were first and second in

the boys long board and Daniel Shea won his fourth short board

competition of the year for the Sailors. Chase Ayes took second in

the short board for Newport.

The Sailors play host to Calvary Chapel Jan. 4 at 56th Street.

Slow start dooms Mustangs

* BASKETBALL: Hot shooting in the first half helped the Valencia

High of Placentia girls basketball team defeat Costa Mesa, 57-33,

which concluded pool play of the El Dorado tournament Thursday.

Valencia made three of its six total three-pointers in the first

quarter en route to a 20-5 lead and Mesa (2-7) couldn’t recover.

Tracy Bjelland and Bethany Vergara led the Mustangs with eight

points apiece while Judie Akansel added six points.

Jennifer Courtney grabbed eight rebounds while point guard Deanna

Sanchez tallied four assists for Mesa, which faces El Dorado’s junior

varsity team for seventh place at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

* BASKETBALL: The La Serna High girls basketball team scored in

double figures all four quarters en route to a 63-28 victory over

Newport Harbor in the second pool play game for both teams in the

Valley Christian tournament Thursday.

Vanessa Miller led the Sailors (3-4) with 13 points while Ivy Melo

and Maaike Trobman each tallied five points.

Newport faces Culver City to conclude pool play at 5 p.m. today.
