Vanguard women topple No. 1

Sophomore guard Lacey Burns had 20 points and Melissa Cook and Kelly

Schmidt added 16 apiece, as the Vanguard University women’s

basketball team defeated previously-unbeaten Cedarville of Ohio,

76-68, in the California Baptist University tournament Friday.

Cedarville (13-1) entered the contest as the top-ranked team in

the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Division II

poll, while Vanguard (8-1) is ranked second in Division I.

Sea Kings take third

* BASKETBALL: The Corona del Mar High girls basketball team

defeated Westminster, 42-28, in the third-place game of the Buena

Park tournament Friday at Buena Park High for the team’s

third-straight win.

Katie Schulte led CdM (5-6) with 12 points while teammate Megan

Benbow tallied nine points.

Mustangs roll past Irish

* BASKETBALL: The Costa Mesa boys basketball team raced out to a

big lead and held on to beat Kennedy, 60-54, in the consolation

semifinals of the Anaheim Convention Center tournament Friday at

Kennedy High.

Senior Jeff Waldron led all scorers with 17 points, followed

closely by junior teammate Tony Krikorian’s 16. Mesa (3-4) plays in

the consolation final at 4:30 p.m. today at the Anaheim Convention

Center.

Sailors top Culver City

* BASKETBALL: The Newport Harbor High girls basketball team

defeated Culver City, 44-38, in both teams’ third game of pool play

in the Valley Christian tournament Friday at Valley Christian High.

Senior Vanessa Miller had 12 points for the Sailors (4-4), who

will play in the fifth-place game of the tournament at 5 p.m. today

against Irvine at Valley Christian.

Sea Kings seal shutout

* SOCCER: Alan Hardison struck for two goals in the first 13

minutes and the Corona del Mar High boys soccer team made it stand as

it shut out its second straight opponent, this time downing Sage

Hill, 2-0, in a nonleague game Friday.

Hardison converted assists from Paul Kenezevic in the seventh

minute and Kyle Schnekluth in the 13th minute before the defenses

took over. Zach Shockley stopped five shots in the first half while

Jimmy O’Hare made four saves in goal in the final 40 minutes for the

Lightning (0-6). Goalkeeper Aman Sahni made two saves in goal for

CdM.

Lightning still perfect

* SOCCER: The Sage Hill School girls soccer team improved to 9-0

this season with a 2-1 nonleague victory over host Calvary Chapel of

Downey Friday.

Freshman Kellee Kim scored a solo goal in the fifth minute while

Sage’s Claire Josephsen tallied the game-winner in the 25th minute on

an assist from Kara Percival.

Goalkeeper Laura Gordon made four saves for the Lightning.

Defense keys OCC win

* BASKETBALL: The Orange Coast College women’s basketball team

beat visiting Southwestern College, 69-50, in the first round of the

Coast Christmas Classic Friday at OCC.

The Pirates (6-4) will face either El Camino in a tournament

semifinal at 7:30 tonight.

Crystal McCormick had a game-high 20 points for the Pirates.

Rhondi Naff contributed 14 points for OCC, connecting on a game-high

three three-pointers.

Sea Kings come up short

* BASKETBALL: Senior Brett Hirata hit five three-point shots, but

it wasn’t enough, as the Corona del Mar High boys basketball team

lost to Rancho Buena Vista, 66-56, in the third round of the Irvine

World News tournament Friday at University High.

Hirata finished with 17 points for the Sea Kings (3-6), while

brothers Ted and Scott Slaughter finished with 16 and 10 points,

respectively.

CdM plays for 15th place in the tournament today at 8:30 a.m. at

Concordia University.

UCI remains winless

* BASKETBALL: The UC Irvine women’s basketball team fell to 0-6

after an 80-74 nonconference loss to visiting Portland State Friday.

Sophomore Angie Ned led the ‘Eaters’ with 23 points while Heather

Arns’ game-high 27 points led Portland State to their first win in

seven games. The Anteaters play Sacramento State Tuesday at 5 p.m.
