UCI’s Schraeder shares Big West Player of the Week honor

UC Irvine junior men’s basketball standout Ross Schraeder has been

named Big West Conference Co-Player of the Week along with Spencer

Nelson of Utah State.

Schraeder helped the Anteaters snap an 11-game road losing streak

with a pair of Bay Area wins last week. He scored 14 points in a

70-58 victory at Santa Clara Dec. 14, hitting 8 of 8 free throws,

including 6 of 6 in the final 52 seconds. He also had a career-high

five assists.

Schraeder scored a game-high 26 points, hitting a career-high 8 of

13 three-pointers, in UCI’s 76-55 win at San Jose State Friday.

He leads the Anteaters in scoring at 16.7 points per game and has

hit 18 of 40 threes (45%).

Sage earns title shot

* BASKETBALL: The Sage Hill School boys basketball team defeated

Zinsmeyer Academy of Long Beach, 70-33, in the semifinals of the

Tarbut V’ Torah tournament Monday at Tarbut V’ Torah High.

The Lightning (9-1) scored early and often and took a 45-13

halftime lead. Senior Matt Loper had a game-high 25 points, while

Stephan Hancock added 17 rebounds.

Sage plays in the championship game today at 11 a.m. against the

tournament host at the same location.

Crush on win streak

* BASKETBALL: The Orange County Crush earned their seventh

straight American Basketball Association victory Sunday, topping the

host Long Beach Jam, 142-110, at the Pyramid.

Derrick Dial and Fred Vinson scored 17 points apiece to lead the

Crush (7-1).

Damian Cantrell had 16 points and 15 rebounds in 22 minutes, while

James Wright added 16 points and Jerry Dupree added 15 for the Crush.

Sean Rooks had 12 points and 10 boards for the winners.

Burnette Lion of Week

* BASKETBALL: Vanguard University junior Tim Burnette, who

produced a combined 24 points and 19 rebounds in men’s basketball

games against two Golden State Athletic Conference foes, was named

Lion of the Week for the week ending Dec. 5. The 6-foot-7 starter had

12 points and nine rebounds in a three-point loss to Christian

Heritage Nov. 30.

He added 12 points and seven boards in the four-point upset win

over Biola Dec. 4.

The Lions (6-4) play host to Northwestern of Iowa Dec. 30.
