Sailors rally to victory
The Newport Harbor High boys basketball team used a strong second
half to pull away from Madison and win, 78-67, in the first round of
the Chula Vista tournament Monday at Chula Vista High.
Rebounding from a 19-point loss to Tesoro Thursday in the
North/South Challenge, the Sailors (5-6) were down, 34-31, at
halftime Monday. But they outscored the San Diego-based school,
24-14, in the third period and led by as many as 22 in the fourth
quarter.
Senior Taylor Young had a game-high 26 points before fouling out
in the fourth, while senior Alex Orth chipped in 13 points.
Senior Brett Perrine added 12 points and Dennis Heenan contributed
10 for the winners.
The Sailors, who have practiced twice in the last three weeks due
to travel time to a tournament in Alaska and a multitude of other
games, are one win away from evening their record after an 0-4 start.
That win could come as early as tonight, with Newport facing Helix
at 6:30 p.m. in the same tournament.
