Sea Kings reach semis
The Corona del Mar High boys soccer team won two games Monday to
advance to the semifinals of the Trabuco Hills tournament today at
Trabuco Hills High.
The Sea Kings (3-2-2) defeated Burroughs, 2-1, in the first round
of the tournament, then knocked off Edison, 1-0, in the
quarterfinals. CdM faces Foothill today at 5 p.m. Against Burroughs,
Bryan Burke took a cross from Brandon Barrett and fired it in to give
the Sea Kings a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute.
Junior Kyle Schnekluth finalized it in the 52nd minute, scoring
off an assist from Ajay Sahni.
Senior Nick Ossipoff scored in the 53rd minute against Edison to
give CdM its third straight win.
Sailors net only goal
* SOCCER: The Newport Harbor High girls soccer team edged Alta
Loma, 1-0, in the opening round of the Foothill tournament Monday at
Foothill High.
Junior Stephanie Lambrakis converted an assist from Jackie Taylor
for the game-winner after a scoreless first half.
Sophomore goalie Mary Gibberson had two saves to record her first
shutout of the season.
Newport Harbor (4-2) continues tournament play today at 11 a.m.
against Mission Viejo.
Melo leads Sailors
* BASKETBALL: The Newport Harbor High girls basketball team
recovered from a sluggish first quarter and scored 19 in the second en route to a 50-42 victory over Yucca Valley in the first round of
pool play at the Palm Desert tournament Monday at Palm Desert High.
Sophomore Ivy Melo had a game-high 18 points for the Sailors
(7-4), while Vanessa Miller and Amber Munnelly each had eight.

Newport nets first win

quarterfinals of the Trabuco Hills tournament Monday at Trabuco Hills
High.
The Sailors (1-5-2) opened the day with a 2-1 loss to Mission
Viejo. Senior Matt Collier scored an unassisted goal to cut into the
Diablos’ 2-0 lead in the second half.
Against Orange, Hernandez credited the defensive work of senior
David Manchester, as well as senior Patrick Epter.
Sage streak snapped
* BASKETBALL: The Sage Hill School boys basketball team had its
seven-game winning streak snapped Monday by St. Anthony, which earned
a 49-43 victory in the opening round of pool play at the St. Anthony
tournament in Long Beach.
Senior Matt Loper had a game-high 22 points for the Lightning
(10-2), while freshman Jamie McGee added 13.
The Lightning were limited to seven players due to injury, illness
and family vacations. Senior co-captain Mike Voge was out with the
flu and is day-to-day, Coach Steve Keith said.
Sage continues pool play tonight at 6 against Aquinas of San
Bernardino.

Lancers top Mustangs
* BASKETBALL: Scott Knox and Larry Puente scored 16 points apiece,
but Costa Mesa High suffered a 72-52 boys basketball loss to Orange
Lutheran in the first round of the Orange Holiday Classic Monday at
Chapman University.
The Mustangs, who play Ontario today at 9 a.m. in the consolation
quarterfinals, fell to 4-6.

Free Crush scrimmage
* BASKETBALL: The Orange County Crush is expected to learn soon
where it will play its American Basketball Association home games.
But, until then, 500 fans are invited to watch the team scrimmage
tonight at 7 at the team’s practice facility in Anaheim.
The first 500 fans will be admitted free at The American Sports
Center, 1500 S. Anaheim Blvd. in Anaheim. Seating is limited.
Sage to meet Mesa
* BASKETBALL: The Sage Hill School girls basketball team will
match up against Costa Mesa today after falling to Antioch, 28-23, in
the first round of the Costa Mesa tournament Monday at Costa Mesa
High.
Sage Hill (2-4) wasn’t able to recover from a scoreless first
quarter and went on to lose its fourth straight.
Senior Kaite Puishys led Sage with eight points, while Katie
McKeon and Debbie Yoder-Lee each had four.
