SPORTS ROUNDUP

The boys’ basketball teams at Huntington Beach, Ocean View and Marina

high schools opened holiday tournament play Monday with first-round

victories.

At the Katella Klassic, Huntington rallied to post a 59-56

overtime victory over Savanna.

The Oilers, who were led by Matt Buckalew’s game-high 23 points,

overcame a 12-point halftime deficit.

At the Century Tournament, Ocean View ripped Los Amigos, 86-38.

The Seahawks got 17 points from Brad Sweezy and 14 more from Clint

Amberry.

Also at the Century Tournament, Marina routed Irvine, 85-40. Jeff

Delaunay topped all scorers with 26 points, Mike Kinoshita and Matt

Molino each scored 17 and James Boury scored 10 for the Vikings.

In other boys’ action, the PlyoCity North-South Challenge at El

Toro High School saw Edison hold off Trabuco Hills, 56-54; Marina

fall to Century, 60-47; and Ocean View be outscored by Capistrano

Valley, 59-48.

Delaunay scored 18 points and Mike Kinoshita had 16 for Marina.

Sweezy’s 16 points topped Ocean View’s scoring in the loss to

Capistrano Valley.

In nonleague play, Edison fell to host Laguna Beach, 54-50. Four

Chargers scored in double figures, led by T.J. Lipold’s 15 points.

In girls’ basketball

At the Excalibur Classic hosted by San Marco High School, a

depleted Huntington Beach squad fell to Carlsbad, 63-32, on Tuesday.

Jade Viloria’s 12 points led the Oilers in scoring.

The loss to Carlsbad came on the heels of a 58-24 setback to El

Camino in a 12-team tournament that featured early-round pool play.

Huntington is without the services of four players, including two

key starters, who are either sidelined by injury or illness.

“It’s tough to face teams of this caliber without a full, healthy

lineup,” Huntington Coach Russ McClurg said. “We’ve got too many

players injured or sick, so it’s been a tough start to the

tournament.”

In nonleague play, Huntington prevailed against host Dana Hills,

54-45. Viloria led all scorers with 18 points, Rebecca Murray scored

12 and Jasmine Erving scored 11 for the Oilers.

Edison claimed a second-place finish in the Black Division at the

Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix.

The Chargers won three games and lost one, the defeat coming in

the division final to Brookswood, the top-ranked team in Canada.

“I thought the girls did real well,” said Edison Coach Corey

Kelly, whose Chargers are playing this week in the Larry Doyle Orange

County Championships tournament, which is hosted by both Edison and

Marina. Edison opened the tournament with a 46-37 win over Saguaro of

Arizona. Rebecca Kepilino scored 17 points and her sister, Wahine,

scored 14.

The Chargers, who trailed, 13-5 after one quarter, outscored

Saguaro, 39-9, over the second and third quarters, to take command.

Edison followed that win with a 51-49 defeat of Mountain Pointe.

In the semifinal round, Edison got past Redondo Union, 34-31.

Rebecca Kepilino again topped the Chargers, this time with 11 points.
