No Square Theater seeks a few good voices

Laguna Beach’s No Square Theater is looking for a few good men, and

women, with better-than-average voices.

The occasion is a February concert packed with show-stopping group

numbers from Broadway shows such as “Les Miserables.” But, as

artistic director Melissa Verdugo advises, “This is not your typical

concert.”

It’s a chance to be part of those show stoppers done the No Square

way.

“There won’t be any dreary ‘Castle on a Cloud’ or ‘I Dreamed a

Dream’ numbers in this show,” Verdugo promises, alluding to two

gentler numbers from “Les Mis.” “Instead, raise your glass in a rowdy

rendition of ‘Master of the House.’”

Other numbers scheduled for inclusion are “Ain’t Misbehavin’” from

the musical revue of the same name and “Put On Your Sunday Clothes”

from “Hello, Dolly.”

Auditions for the concert -- entitled “All Together Now:

Broadway’s Greatest Group Numbers” -- will be held from 11 a.m. to 4

p.m. Jan. 8 at the No Square studios, 1863 S. Coast Highway in

Laguna.

All are welcome -- although the tryouts will be by appointment

only.

To make an appointment, contact Verdugo at NoSquareAD@aol.com or

(949) 246-7701.

Those auditioning are asked to prepare a song from the musical

theater. You’ll need sheet music or a sound track when you arrive on

the 8th. An accompanist will be provided, along with a stereo.

Laguna’s show-stopping singers will strut their stuff at 7:30 p.m.

Feb. 4 and 5 in the Artists’ Theater at Laguna Beach High School.

The concert will be under the direction and musical direction of

Adam Hemming, who’s been involved with the No Square Theater since

its conception in 1997. He’s the director of the Gay Men’s Chorus,

and plans to bring that group to join in at the concert.

“Whether you are a seasoned veteran or have never stepped foot on

the stage, we have a role for you,” Verdugo promises.

“Join us, and other choirs from the community and beyond, in a

night of ‘Broadway’s Greatest Group Numbers.’”
