Newport Harbor boys win Chula Vista championship

The Newport Harbor High boys basketball team won the championship

game of the Chula Vista tournament Thursday, defeating Vista, 58-46,

at Chula Vista High in San Diego County, with Taylor Young being

named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Brett Perrine and Vinnie Nasca finished with 17 and four points,

respectively, and were named to the all-tournament team. Young had a

game-high 19 points for the Sailors (8-6), who play at Laguna Beach

Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Orange Coast wins tourney

* BASKETBALL: Lauren Stepanski scored a game-high 26 points to

lead the Orange Coast College women’s basketball team to a 58-51 win

over Irvine Valley College in the championship game of the Palomar

tournament Thursday at Palomar College.

Stepanski was named tournament Most Valuable Player and broke an

OCC single-game rebound record, grabbing 23 boards Thursday. Valerie

Katayama, who scored three points for the Pirates (10-5), was named to the all-tournament team.

Vanguard women burn stars

* BASKETBALL: Kelly Schmidt scored a game-high 25 points to lead

the Vanguard University women’s basketball team to a 78-60 victory

over 11th-ranked Oklahoma City University Thursday in the Golden

State Athletic Conference tournament. The second-ranked Lions

improved to 11-1.

Costa Mesa earns eleventh

* BASKETBALL: Junior Scott Knox scored 26 points and led the Costa

Mesa High boys basketball team to an 11th-place finish in the Orange

Holiday Classic, as the Mustangs defeated Leuzinger, 75-72, Thursday

at Chapman University.

Knox was also named to the all-tournament team. Junior Brian

Molina chipped in 12 points for the Mustangs (6-7), who host

Westminster Jan. 5 at 7 p.m.

Sailors remain unbeaten

* WATER POLO: Leah Robertson scored four goals and Anne Belden and

Melissa Wheeler each added a hat trick as the Newport Harbor High

girls water polo team defeated visiting Montebello, 14-8, Thursday in

a nonleague game.

The Sailors opened up a 6-3 halftime lead to improve to 9-0 on the

season.

They play at El Toro today at 10 a.m.

CdM edges Mustangs

* BASKETBALL: Junior Katie Schulte had a game-high 23 points to

lead the Corona del Mar High girls basketball team to a 13th-place

finish in the Costa Mesa tournament, as the Sea Kings defeated Costa

Mesa, 43-34, Thursday at Costa Mesa High.

Kristina Wayte and Shannon Johnson each added six points for the

Sea Kings (7-8), while junior Tracy Bjelland led the Mustangs (4-10)

with 10 points.

Sea Kings eliminated

* SOCCER: The Corona del Mar High boys soccer team lost two

pool-play matches Thursday and was eliminated from the Irvine Valley

College tournament.

CdM lost, 3-0, to both Servite and Concord De La Salle to finish

third in its pool. The top two teams from each pool advance. The Sea

Kings play Newport Harbor at Orange Coast College Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Van’t Hof falls in semis

* TENNIS: Kaes Van’t Hof, from Newport Beach, was eliminated

Thursday in the men’s singles semifinals of the Costa Mesa

Intercollegiate Classic by eventual champion Nima Roshan, 6-1, 6-2.

Van’t Hof and partner Adam Loucks also lost in the semifinals of

the men’s open doubles to the eventual winning duo of Taylor Bedilion

and Jarryd Cooper, 8-3.

Lightning fall in final

* BASKETBALL: The Sage Hill School boys basketball team lost to

Renaissance Academy, 48-36, in the consolation final of the St.

Anthony tournament Thursday.

Senior guard Matt Loper was named to the all-tournament team after

scoring a game-high 18 points. He also added eight rebounds and four

assists in the loss. The Lightning (12-3) play at Fairmont Prep

Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Lions down Sage

* BASKETBALL: The Sage Hill School girls basketball team lost to

Westminster, 43-35, in the 13th-place game of the Costa Mesa

tournament Thursday at Costa Mesa High.

Haywood Wright led the Lightning (3-6) with 13 points, while Kaitlin Tyre chipped in 11.

Raiders maul Lions

* BASKETBALL: The visiting Vanguard University men’s basketball

team closed 2004 by losing to Northwestern College of Iowa, 108-78,

Thursday in a nonconference game.

Leon Rosborough led the Lions (6-5) with 18 points, while Antquon

James added 14. Vanguard resumes Golden State Athletic Conference

play Jan. 4 at Concordia University at 7:30 p.m.

Big run ruins UCI

* BASKETBALL: The UC Irvine women’s basketball team remained

winless as the Anteaters lost, 84-57, to visiting UC Santa Barbara

Thursday in a Big West Conference matchup.

UCI (0-9, 0-2 in conference) took a seven-point first-half lead,

but the Gauchos (4-4, 2-0) went on a 23-5 second-half run. Haley Tull

led the ‘Eaters with 19 points.

Mia Fisher had a game-high 20 points for the Gauchos.
