Sanchez’s shot propels Mustangs

Junior Deanna Sanchez hit the game-winning shot with 10 seconds left

to propel the Costa Mesa High girls basketball team over host

Westminster, 37-36, in both teams’ Golden West League opener Tuesday.

Senior Bethany Vergara hit three-straight three-pointers in the

fourth quarter to pull the Mustangs (5-10, 1-0 in league) within

range, and then Sanchez took a pass from Judie Akansel and tossed it

in for the win.

Mesa extends streak

* SOCCER: Senior Jenny Sparks had three goals and senior Nilani

Duarte tallied two to lead the Costa Mesa High girls soccer team past

Saddleback, 7-1, in a Golden West League game Tuesday at Saddleback

High.

Junior Jasmin Day added one goal and three assists for the

Mustangs (8-2, 3-0 in league), who are riding a four-game win streak.

Freshman Marina Lazos also had a goal, while Duarte and Sparks each

had an assist.

Eagles open with win

* BASKETBALL: Junior Be Diep had 14 points, including two

three-pointers, to lead the Estancia High girls basketball team to a

36-32 Golden West League opening victory against visiting Orange.

Sophomore Yasmine Arroyo added 10 points for the Eagles (4-10, 1-0

in league), while Michelle Hallock chipped in four points.

Sage Hill doubles up

* BASKETBALL: Senior Katie Puishys had a season-high 28 points to

lead the Sage Hill School girls basketball team over host Fairmont

Prep, 70-34, in a nonleague game Tuesday.

Junior Haywood Wright added 17 points, four steals and 15 rebounds

for the Lightning (4-6), who open Academy League play when they host

Oxford Academy Friday at 6 p.m.

Estancia pins the pack

* WRESTLING: Six different Estancia High wrestlers pinned their

opponents in Tuesday’s 42-40 victory against host Orange in the

Golden West League opener.

Danny Alderete pinned Orange’s Mike Flores in the 130-pound weight class, while Caley Carr (135), J.C. Kurzen (140), David Loredo (145),

Gabriel Thaler (160) and Alex Sotomayor (171) all pinned their

opponents for the Eagles (1-0).

Lions pounce Eagles

* BASKETBALL: Host Concordia University had no answer for the

strong post play of Kelly Schmidt and Rachel Besse on Tuesday night

as Vanguard, ranked No. 2 in the NAIA, pulled out an 82-56 Golden

State Athletic Conference women’s basketball victory. Schmidt and

Besse combined for 47 points, shooting 20-for-28 from the floor.

Vanguard (12-1, 3-0 in the GSAC) shot 61% and out-rebounded the

Eagles, 34-31.

Lightning earn tie

* SOCCER: Sophomore Braden Ross took a pass from Zach Milder in

the first minute of the game and smashed it into the bottom left

corner of the goal to propel the Sage Hill School boys soccer team to

a 1-1 tie with visiting Fairmont Prep Tuesday in a nonleague game.

Milder passed the ball across the 18-yard line to an open Ross who

gave the Lightning (0-6-1) the early lead. But Fairmont (4-1-1)

evened it up in the 51st minute for the eventual tie.

Breakers stop Sailors

* BASKETBALL: Junior Claire Bevacqua scored a game-high 22 points

as the host Laguna Beach High girls basketball team sent Newport

Harbor to a 64-49 nonleague loss Tuesday.

Vanessa Miller led the Sailors (9-6) with 20 points while Ciara

Lawrence and Rachele Mooers each added eight for the visitors.

Monarchs too tough

* SOCCER: The Newport Harbor High girls soccer team scored two

goals in the second half but came up short to host Mater Dei, 4-2, in

a nonleague game Tuesday.

Junior Amanda Laz took a pass from senior Julia Bernay and booted

it into top right corner of the goal in the 53rd minute for the

Sailors’ first goal. Junior Krystal Wright scored a few minutes later

off a pass from Tayler Giacamoro, but it wasn’t enough to overcome

the Monarchs’ four goals.

Costa Mesa loses first

* WRESTLING: The Costa Mesa High wrestling team lost to visiting

Westminster, 48-18, in both teams’ first Golden West League meet.

Only two matches were held, due to a lack of wrestlers from each

team. Junior Chris Knox, wrestling in the 135-pound weight class, won

by pin 33 seconds into the first period for the Mustangs (0-1), while

Mesa senior Joe Amburgey (189) lost by decision, 6-0.

Vanguard men edged

* BASKETBALL: The Concordia University men’s basketball team,

ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, needed a second-half comeback to hold off

Vanguard for a 76-70 Golden State Athletic Conference victory Tuesday

night.

Brian Kim led the Lions (6-6, 1-2 in the GSAC) with 26 points.
