AYSO all-stars third in tourney

The AYSO Region 55 girls’ Under-10 All-Star Gold team kicked off the

New Year by earning a third-place finish at the Hi-5 Soccer

Tournament in Fountain Valley Jan 1 to 2.

Region 55 wrapped up third place by defeating the Tustin Gold

All-Stars, 2-1, in overtime.

Tustin actually took a 1-0 lead in the first quarter, before Coach

Eddie Sanchez’s Region 55 squad rallied.

Tustin maintained that 1-0 lead through a defensive struggle that

went to the fourth quarter, when Christina Sanchez was able to loft

the ball into the net from a corner kick and bring Region 55 into a

1-1 tie.

That score stood through several overtime periods, and the game

went down to a five-on-five match. Region 55 won it when Katie

Gainous sent a pass to Sanchez, who punched it into the net for the

2-1 win.

Region 55 easily won its tournament opener, defeating the Tustin

Silver All-Stars, 4-0.

Sanchez posted four goals in the first half, getting assists on

offense from Gainous, Mikylah Morrell, Kirsti Stangeland, Kayla

Wigney and Haley Bergeron.

The second game in pool play saw Region 55 shut down Fountain

Valley, 5-0.

Wigney started the scoring in the first quarter with a goal,

Sanchez continued her hot tournament scoring with goals in the second

and third quarters, Kayla Wigney tapped in another goal to end the

third quarter, and Morrell finished off the scoring with a

fourth-quarter goal.

Ashton McKeown got both shutouts in the net and was aided by the

defensive efforts of Lindsay Archer, Dana Rutkin, Rachael Distler and

Carolyn Archer.

Jeremy Martinez poured in 17 points as the Magic rolled to

victory.

Michael Meagher contributed four points and also was a standout on

defense, while Shad Harris, Michael Kibler, Nathan Madden and Kamran

Nafison each scored two points.

Nafison and Harris, both guards, fueled a fluid Magic running

offense. Meagher and Madden had numerous steals on defense, and

Martinez and Kibler controlled the boards.
