UCI men victorious

The UC Irvine men’s swimming team dominated the field to win the team

title, while the Anteater women finished second at the UCI/Ayres

Hotel & Suites sprint invitational Saturday at the Anteater Aquatics

Complex.

UCI freshman Randall Tom won the 200-yard butterfly (1 minute,

51.74 seconds), the 200 individual medley (1:54.46) and the 50 fly

(22.59) to help the Anteater men produce 801 team points, 347 more

than runner-up Cal Baptist.

Sophomores Dan Simonsen and Eric Reilly won two events for UCI.

Simonsen was victorious in the 100 breaststroke (57.29) and the 50

breaststroke (27.07). Reilly topped the field in the 50 freestyle

(21.23) and the 100 free (47.22).

Additional individual winners for the UCI men included: sophomore

Mike Cohee (200 free in 1:43.69); freshman Michael Radford (100 fly

in 53.49); and sophomore Brian Buchanan (200 backstroke in 1:56.58).

The UCI women’s 399 points were 113 shy of team champion Nevada.

Anteater junior Lara Bjargardottir won the 200 breaststroke

(2:18.51) and the 200 IM (2:05.02), while freshman Chelsea Nagata (50

fly in 25.05) and senior Kim Do (50 back in 26.59) also won events

for the hosts.

UCI sophomore Duke Krautim was second in the men’s 200 fly

(1:53.97), 200 IM (1:55.97) and 200 back (1:57.27).

Reilly was runner-up in the 200 free (1:44.01), while Cohee

finished second in the 100 free (47.63) and Saul Fields was second in

the 50 fly (24.45).

Tom was fourth in the 50 free (21.84) and fifth in the 200 free

(1:45.39), the latter capping a top-five sweep for the Anteaters.

Do was second in the 100 back (58.13) and third in the 200 back

(2:08.05).

UCI’s Ashley DePaul was second in the women’s 200 fly (2:06.71).

Tars second, CdM third

* WATER POLO: Newport Harbor High’s girls water polo team saw its

20-game winning streak snapped as Sea View League rival Foothill

edged the Sailors, 9-8, to win the Santa Barbara tournament

championship Saturday.

Kally Lucas, Ashling Taylor and Anne Belden each scored twice

while Melissa Wheeler and Laurel Laidlaw tallied one goal apiece for

the Sailors (13-1), who defeated the Knights, 5-3, in the final of

the Holiday Cup tournament at Newport Dec. 23.

Belden tallied three goals while Lucas and Wheeler each added one

in Newport’s 5-2 victory over Santa Margarita in a semifinal

Saturday.

Corona del Mar, meanwhile, took fifth place in the tournament

following two victories Saturday.

Jordan Anae and Camille Hewko each scored three goals while Ashley

Chandler and Katie Indvik added two apiece in the Sea Kings’ 11-8

victory over Laguna Beach, which scored five goals in the fourth

quarter of the fifth-place game. Katlin Kubas tallied one goal, four

steals and two assists while Chandler added three steals and one

assist.

CdM (8-5) defeated Long Beach Wilson, 9-4, in the fifth-place

semifinal with Hewko and Anae each scoring three goals to go with two

by Indvik and one from Cari Levine.

Vanguard squeaks by

* BASKETBALL: Sophomore Kelly Schmidt had game-highs in points

(23) and rebounds (12) to lead the Vanguard University women’s

basketball team to a 70-68 Golden State Athletic Conference victory

over host The Master’s Saturday in Santa Clarita.

Both Rachel Besse and Lacey Burns had 10 points apiece for

Vanguard (14-1, 5-0 in the GSAC), while the Lions shot 30% from

beyond the arc and 74.2% from the free-throw line.

Four different players scored in double digits for The Master’s

(8-3, 2-2).

UCI stumbles in BWC

* BASKETBALL: The UC Irvine women’s basketball team lost its

fourth-straight Big West Conference game Saturday to host Pacific,

54-42, in Stockton.

Lauren Yadon led the Anteaters (1-11, 0-4 in the BWC) with nine

points and seven rebounds, while Angie Ned contributed eight points

and eight rebounds.

Dana Zimmerman had a game-high 20 points for Pacific (4-7, 2-2).

Vanguard mastered

* BASKETBALL: Brian Kim had a game-high 31 points, but it wasn’t

enough as the Vanguard University men’s basketball team lost to host

The Master’s, 63-60, Saturday night in Golden State Athletic

Conference action.

Kim was 5 of 8 from three-point land, but Vanguard let a 27-20

halftime lead slip away.

Leon Rosborough added 10 points for Vanguard (7-7, 2-3 in the

GSAC), while Tim Burnette had 12 rebounds. Vanguard shot 42% from the

field to the opposers’ 35.4%, but The Master’s got the win and

improved its record to 9-4, 3-1.
