Dent beaten in singles final

Taylor Dent, a former standout at Corona del Mar High, was defeated

in the singles final of the Australian men’s hardcourt championships

Sunday in Adelaide, Australia.

Dent, the No. 5 seed, fell to No. 2-seeded Joachime Johansson,

7-5, 6-3 in the event which serves as a tuneup for the Australian

Open, scheduled to begin Jan. 17.

It was the sixth singles final for Dent, who also reached the

final of the Australian men’s hardcourt event in 2004.

Faulkner Lion of Week

* BASKETBALL: Vanguard University sophomore Lisa Faulkner, a 2004

NAIA first-team All-American in women’s basketball, has been named

Lion of the Week by the school.

The starting point guard for the No. 2-ranked Lions (11-1 through

Jan. 4), Faulkner sparked two victories at the Golden State Athletic

Conference Challenge at Azusa Pacific.

She had 17 assists and 10 points in a win over Bethany College

Dec. 29, then had 13 points and eight assists in a 78-60 win over No.

11 Oklahoma City Dec. 30.

Faulkner’s 17 assists against Bethany broke a tournament

single-game record and her 25 total assists established a tournament

record.

She was named to the all-tournament team.

Through 12 games, Faulkner led the Lions and all conference

players with 13.3 assists per game and was adding 11.5 points and 4.1

rebounds per contest.

Voge, McKeon lauded

* CROSS COUNTRY: Sage Hill School cross country standouts Mike

Voge (boys) and Katie McKeon (girls) have been named Runner of the

Year in the Academy League.

Voge, a senior, topped the field at league finals, as did McKeon,

a freshman.

Joining Voge on the boys first team is junior Zach Chandy, who

finished third in league.

Freshman Connor Rose (boys) and sophomore Erica Faris (girls) are

second-team all-league performers.

League race resumes

* BASKETBALL: The Golden West League boys basketball race resumes

tonight for Costa Mesa High and Estancia.

First-year coach Jason Simco’s Estancia squad (11-4, 1-0 in

league) earned a 75-51 win over Orange Wednesday.

The Eagles will visit perennial league champion Ocean View tonight

at 7.

Costa Mesa (8-7, 2-0will attempt to remain unbeaten in league when

they play host to Saddleback tonight at 7.
