An angel delivers for Newport woman

A disabled Newport Beach woman whose three-wheeled bicycle -- her

only form of independent transportation -- was stolen New Year’s Day

received a gift from an angel this week.

Tarah Wakeling, 32, suffered serious injuries in a car crash nine

years ago and used the bike to get around town since she physically

can’t drive a car.

After her story appeared in the Daily Pilot on Monday, more than a

dozen readers offered to help buy her a new wet of wheels. One man,

who identified himself only as “an angel from the Yankees,” went

ahead and purchased a bike for her from Jax Bicycle Center in

Huntington Beach and let her pick out all the accessories for it she

wanted.

* The City Council created a “borders committee” of council

members who will meet with Costa Mesa and Huntington Beach officials

to discuss projects and issues that mutually affect the three cities.

Newport already has a borders committee to deal with Irvine.

The new committee’s first order of business is a tall one.

Officials expect to talk about three parcels of unincorporated county

land that Newport and Costa Mesa have been eyeing for annexation. One

parcel of particular note is west Santa Ana Heights, which abuts an

area Newport already has annexed but is considered to be in Costa

Mesa’s sphere of influence.

* An ad hoc committee of council members, residents and members of

several city commissions will look at alternative uses for the

Marinapark site, the council decided Tuesday. Committee members will

be named Jan. 25. The committee will explore what the community would

like to see on the property, which is designated for public

recreational uses.

A mobile home park is one of the land’s current occupants and a

controversial hotel was proposed for the site, but city voters in

November rejected a rezoning measure that was needed to build the

hotel.
