CdM tops Tars, again

The Corona del Mar High frosh/soph girls basketball team defeated

host Newport Harbor, 34-15, Jan. 8, to add a second win over the

Sailors this season.

Emily Tsai scored a game-high eight points to lead the Sea Kings

(5-2), while the pressing defense of Allie Childs and R.C. Avedissian

contributed significantly to a 10-0 CdM third-quarter run.

Frosh/soph

The Corona del Mar High frosh/soph boys soccer team defeated host

Calvary Chapel, 2-0, Friday in Pacific Coast League action.

Mitchell Williams scored using his head off a crossing pass in the

second half, while Ryan Caughren stole a Calvary Chapel pass and

scored.

The Sea Kings improved to 6-0-1, 2-0 in league.

Boys soccer

Frosh/soph

The Corona del Mar High frosh/soph boys soccer team earned an 11-0

Pacific Coast League win over host University Wednesday.

Eight different players scored for CdM (5-0-1, 1-0 in league), led

by Paulo Iaccarino, who posted a hat trick.

Charlie Albright added two more on the sloppy, muddy surface at

University High.

CdM scored four goals in the first half and seven in the second

half on the muddier end of the field.

Thomas Dailynas, Mitchell Williams, Jeff Carlson, Greg Wolonsky

and Carl Waniek all scored for the Sea Kings.

Boys basketball

Junior varsity

Estancia High sophomores Ian Castellanos and Jeff Mullins scored

11 points apiece, but host Ocean View came away with a 47-43 victory

in a Golden West League game Monday .

The Eagles dropped to 6-6, 0-2 in league.

Junior varsity

Sophomore Weston Dunlap scored 19 points and sophomore Nick Nigro

added 15 to Newport Harbor to a 64-49 triumph over visiting Irvine

Friday in Sea View League junior varsity boys basketball action.

Coach Bob Torribio’s Sailors improved to 10-6, 2-1 in league.

Wrestling

Junior varsity

Four Newport Harbor High wrestlers earned victories in a 44-16 Sea

View League loss at Woodbridge Thursday.

Jose Anaya, competing in the 125-pound weight class, defeated his

opponent, 10-0. Coach Dominic Bulone said Anaya is a fluid wrestler

who consistently finds ways to wins.

Tyler Hogsett (152 pounds) pinned his opponent in the third

period, Ryan Dickey (160) earned an 8-5 victory and Bryan Bennett

(275) scored a two-point takedown with one second left in overtime to

win, 8-6.

Junior varsity

The Estancia High junior varsity girls soccer team fell, 3-1,

Friday at Saddleback to absorb its first Golden West League loss.

Araceli Ceja scored the lone goal for the Eagles (5-2-2, 2-1 in

league).
