Corona del Mar controls Laguna Beach
The Corona del Mar High girls soccer team controlled most of the
action in Thursday’s 2-1 Pacific Coast League victory over visiting
Laguna Beach.
Junior Jessica Mazura had a shot blocked, but sophomore
KalieTrider put in the rebound in the ninth minute for CdM (9-8, 4-1
in league).
Laguna Beach answered with a break away goal in the 20th minute,
but that was one of only three shots on goal mustered by the
Breakers.
The Sea Kings regained the lead when Mazura’s cross pass was
controlled and shot into the back of the net by junior Taylor Fallon
in the 25th minute.
Senior goalkeeper Katie Sciesser had two saves while fullback
Tanisha Senertne provided solid defense and leadership.
CdM plays at Tesoro Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.
Sailors stifle Aliso
* WRESTLING: The Newport Harbor High wrestling team earned its
first Sea View League victory in two years with a 47-36 triumph over
visiting Aliso Niguel Thursday.
The Sailors (4-4, 1-2 in league) had pin performances from seven
different wrestlers against Aliso -- the same team their last league
win came from two years ago.
Brian Beaudette, competing in the 215-pound weight class, came
back after losing 10-3 at one point and pinned his opponent, Namun
Paik. The pin provided some momentum for Newport and it won the next
five matches.
Michael Bates (140), Jessee Marshall (160), Michael Cefali (103),
Eddie Charcas (119), Victor George (125) and Kyle Molina (130) all
pinned their opponents for the Sailors.
Newport competes in the San Clemente tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday
at San Clemente High.
Lions roll past Lancers
* BASKETBALL: The Vanguard University women’s basketball team
maintained its hold on first place in the Golden State Athletic
Conference with a 107-70 victory over visiting Cal Baptist Thursday.
Six Lions scored in double figures, including sophomore Kelly
Schmidt, who tallied her seventh double-double this season with 27
points and 10 rebounds.
Lacey Mills, who hit a game-high five three-pointers, Rachel Besse
and Andrea Jacobson all finished with 15 points while Melissa Cook
and Lisa Faulkner added 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Lions
(17-1, 8-0 in the GSAC). Vanguard made 36 of its 67 field-goal
attempts (53.7%) while outrebounding the Lancers, 52-34.
Cal Baptist fell to 11-9, 3-5.

Mesa hold off Orange
* BASKETBALL: Bethany Vergara scored a team-high 13 points while
Tracy Bjelland added 12 to help the Costa Mesa High girls basketball
team earn a 46-39 Golden West League victory over visiting Orange
Thursday.
Vergara grabbed seven rebounds while Bjelland and Deanna Sanchez
each tallied six boards for the Mustangs (6-13, 2-3 in league), who
took the lead for good with just more than five minutes remaining in
the second quarter. Orange fell to 0-5 in league.
The Mustangs host Estancia at 7 p.m. Monday.

* SOCCER: Five different players scored goals for the Costa Mesa
High girls soccer team, which beat visiting Westminster 8-0 Thursday
in a Golden West League match.
Senior Jenny Sparks, junior Jasmine Day and sophomore Sharon
Frazier each had two goals for the Mustangs (12-2, 7-0 in league).
Sparks also had two assists, one of seven players to have an assist.
Seniors Rachel Ronquillo and Nilani Duerte each had one goal.
Costa Mesa plays at Santa Ana Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.
Eagles earn draw
* SOCCER: The Estancia High girls soccer team played with
intensity to earn a 1-1 tie against visiting Orange Thursday in a
Golden West League match.
Senior captain Elise Carroll scored eight minutes into the second
half to erase a 1-0 halftime deficit.
Sophomore goalkeeper Madison Urtusuaspegui, playing in her first
varsity game, finished with 10 saves. Her spirit raised the morale of
the entire team, her coach said.
Estancia (5-4-4, 1-3-3) plays Ocean View Thursday at Balearic Park
in Costa Mesa.
Vanguard falls
* BASKETBALL: The Vanguard University men’s basketball team had
20-point performances from Brian Kim and Brian Roberts, but lost to
visiting California Baptist, 84-76, in a Golden State Athletic
Conference game Thursday at The Pit.
The Lions (8-9, 3-5 in the GSAC) shot 51.9% from the field and
tied Baptist’s 34 rebounds, but a strong 45-point first half from Cal
Baptist (13-5, 5-3) was too much for Vanguard to overcome.

Saints outmuscle Eagles
WRESTLING: Five Estancia High wrestlers were pinned and visiting
Santa Ana stayed undefeated with a 54-15 victory in the Golden West
League Thursday.
Dominic Durastanti, wrestling in the heavyweight class for
Estancia, pinned his opponent in two minutes, 11 seconds.
Junior Juny Panduro, in the 140-pound weight class, decisioned his
opponent, 6-0, for Estancia (6-8, 2-1 in league), while senior Alex
Sotomayor (160) defeated his opponent, 17-12. Eagles’ Sophomore
Effren Alvarez decisioned his opponent, 6-3.
Santa Ana improved to 13-0, 3-0.
Estancia hosts cross town rival Costa Mesa at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
LBSU fells UCI
* BASKETBALL: Long Beach State women’s basketball guard Aisha
Hollans had a game-high 27 points and the 49ers defeated visiting UC
Irvine, 74-50, Thursday in a Big West Conference game.
Angie Ned led the Anteaters (2-13, 1-6 in the BWC) with 16 points,
while Melissa Jacob chipped in 12. Long Beach State outrebounded UCI,
52-31, and shot 42% from the field to UCI’s 34.5%.

The Eagles (4-13, 1-4 in league) fell behind, 30-11, at halftime
and couldn’t recover. Be Diep led the Eagles with nine points while
Marisela Sandoval finished with seven points and five rebounds.

UCI diamond bash
* BASEBALL: The UC Irvine baseball program, under the leadership
of first-year coach Dave Serrano, will host the annual Baseball Bash
Saturday at Anteater Ballpark.
Doors open at 1 p.m. and admission is free.

playing in a scrimmage game scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
