Here are some of the items the Newport-Mesa Unified School District

board of trustees will be discussing tonight.

AUTHORS FESTIVAL BOOKMARK WINNERS

Three Newport-Mesa students will be recognized as winners of the

districtwide Authors Festival 2005 bookmark contest. Judges

determined that Erin Hatch, a first-grader at Andersen Elementary,

Adelaide Alva, a third-grader at Lincoln Elementary, and Idalma Cruz,

a sixth-grader at Davis Elementary, submitted bookmarks worthy of

special recognition.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The board will recognize the three finalists Tuesday, and the

three finalists’ bookmarks will be distributed to students in

kindergarten through sixth grade districtwide.

APPOINTMENTS

OF PRINCIPALS

The board will decide whether to fill, at least temporarily, two

vacant school principal positions.

The board will meet Janis King and vote on her appointment as a

permanent principal at Pomona Elementary School, effective Feb. 21.

In addition, the board has recommended Robert Metz to continue as

interim principal at Corona del Mar High School through the end of

the spring semester.

WHAT TO EXPECT

King seems to be the only candidate for the vacant Pomona

Elementary position, trustee David Brooks said. Since the interview

process has already been completed, the board will vote on her

appointment tonight.

If this vote passes, retiree Patrick Backus would remain as an

interim principal at Pomona Elementary through April 30.

Metz is expected to resume duties heading Corona del Mar High

School, he said.

SECONDARY TEXTBOOK ADOPTION

The board will vote on the final adoption of seven textbooks,

including coursework in foreign language, math, science and English.

The books have been used by teachers at Corona del Mar, Newport

Harbor and Back Bay high schools and have been on display at the

district office since November.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The textbooks have already been approved by several district

officials and budgeted, and trustees will likely vote to approve

them, as well.
